The flywheel and crankshaft interface is a tapered fit. I dunno, but I suspect the clinton does not have puller holes in the flywheel. USE THEM if it does.

If there are no puller holes, check back and I'll tell you how to get it off without damage. Meanwhile, DO NOT hammer on it or the nut.

In all the Tecumseh manual I have ever read it always tells you to use the knock off tool, never a puller. Tecumseh casted in the holes for a puller but like I said they recommend a knock off tool....you know what my knock off tool is don't you F_R? a nice deep nut...and I always replace the little thin factory flywheel nut with one thats deeper with more threads.
But your absolutly right never use that flywheel nut to bang on, you might get the flywheel off but when your all done and torqued back down someplace on the lake or river shes going to wiggle wobble lose....and thats a bad trip man....LOL

but on the other hand my Johnson 70 would eat a knock off tool

back off the nut and soak with a little penetrating oil overnight.
While you have the puller fitted and under tension try to heat around the centre for a short time, not too much or you may damage the magnets. a smack with a copper mallet may help

OK, time to take the time to tell how to make your own knocker. The deep nut is one way, but here is how I do it. Go to the hardware store and get yourself two nuts and a short bolt, shorter the better, same thread as the shaft. I think it is 7/16 NF.

Run one nut up on the bolt, then the second one only a turn or two. Then run the first nut back down against the second one and jam them together. You have just made yourself a special tool.

To use, screw the knocker onto the shaft, hand tight. Using a screwdriver, pry lightly upward on the flywheel, just a tad, enough to raise it up in the bearing. Now use a hammer to give the knocker a sharp rap or two. That flywheel will pop right off, no problem. No magic potions or heat required.

Notice I said a sharp rap with the hammer. I did not say murder it with a sledge. It is the shock that knocks it loose, not the bash. And don't pry on it with a crowbar. All it takes is a lift.

I have used this method on a bazillion small motors, including lawn mowers and chainsaws, have never damaged one yet. The knocker puts the shock on the end of the shaft, not on the threads.

Thanks F_R, When I get back on my pegs I'm going to make me one....We also should give some instruction on a flywheel holder, I would take a picture of mine but I.m land locked for a few more days.... but in short a good
solid thick broom handle or board and 3 drywall screws a little belt sanding and a old serpintine belt

Nice, F_R - That seems like a really efficient way to transfer shock to the end of the crank, instead of making the threads eat it all.

Sweet. I like that little tool. I'm gonna make a few of those. I think instead of two nuts though, I might try a coupler with the same thread.

If anybody wants a factory made tool, get one from a lawn mower shop. They are Techumseh special tools.

I tried it here at home at the last big Tecumseh dealer that was around this area, SO. IL....no go but my little buddy with the J/E shop he has all the old tecumseh toys...so if its something I don't want to buy I just borrow it, he said he never worries about who has his Tec tools...cause theres a 99.9 % chance its me.

Techumseh part number 670103, 7/16" thread; Part number 670169, 1/2" thread; 670314, 5/8" thread. Prime Line numbers are 7-05955, 7-05956, 7-05957, respectively. I don't suggest using the 5/8" on outboards, they come off too hard---use a puller.

That is a great site. Don't know how many times I have needed it. I need a manual for my 115 hp inline 6 1986 mercury. But there is like 3 of the manuals in there that kinda fit that category. Any suggestions? I don't wanna hijack this thread... Reposted here
