Re: FLYWHEELS

hello
it is imperative to check the fit of the tapers. if you look about on the posts in the evinrude forum I have gone through this recently. the key just index's the flywheel. it does not and cannot hold it as you have found. your flywheel may still work if you properly lap it to the crank. you can tighten the flywheel nut till the snout breaks and if the tapers are not within .0005" ( about1/6th the dia of the average human hair) in concavity and convexity it will shear another. the flywheel is held entirly by the fit of the taper.
fix the problem or the next flywheel will shear another.

Re: FLYWHEELS

Rodbolt & DHP are both correct. Lap the taper & torque nut to specs. You will forever be shearing the key if the tapers do not fit properly.

If your keyway in the flywheel is damaged beyond repair, the best option may be to replace the flywheel. Even then, it is best to hand lap the taper on the replacement to ensure a good fit.

If you can't find a flywheel locally, a good resource for older parts is www.twincityoutboard.com

Re: FLYWHEELS

I always thought the most common cause of shearing the woodruff key was a backfire due to improper timeing.

Re: FLYWHEELS

backfire combined with the key driving the flywheel, due to improper fit/torque. make sure that after lapping, you torque it down properly. Remember, the key is ONLY a locator, as several others have pointed out, the taper drives the flywheel
