Foce/Gamefisher 5HP No Spark Need to find the year made

I have a Gamefisher 5hp (by Force i have determined by pictures of others) that i recently acquired. My guess is it is early/mid 90's vintage. I am getting around to try and get it running. I messed with it earlier this week and it had spark and sputtered with some starting fluid. Today, i have no spark at all. Plug is good (sparks when hooked to another outboard). Kill switch is disconnected. Everything is clean inside (points, magnets). Not an expert but i am figuring maybe the coil/magneto is bad??. Problem is the serial/model# plate is missing from the motor. Any idea how to determine the exact year/model without this? There is a number stamped on the block R577805 but that is the only other markings i can find.

Next problem would be to find somewhere that still offers this part. Seems the places i have looked at diagrams of similar looking motors all list the magneto/coil as obsolete.

Test Don t Guess and dont spend money until you test it .....First open the points and measure resistance from points wire to earth ...should be about 0.3 ohm if its infinity then its open circuit. Then measure from plug wire to earth ...should be a few thousand ohms ...if its infinity is open circuit . Dont forget the condenser may be faulty and the contacts must be 100% clean and gapped right ....done on the top of the cam ...if you had a spark yesterday you can get one today.

Thanks for the info. The resistance seems to be in the range of what you stated (although it has been a few years since i have pulled the meter out of the drawer), i do not see anything that resembles a condenser on this motor, not much to it. Everything is clean inside so i seem to be back where i was. any suggestions would be helpful.

you need the model number so we can really help you, your number should be something like 225-xxxx and more than likly you have BIM II coils, well know for just failing

That is the problem. The ID plate is missing from the motor so i have no idea the year or model number other than by looking at pictures of similar motors online. I am guessing it is an early 90's vintage from this and by looking online at the schematics of the different 5 HP Gamefisher/Force motors of that vintage. All seem to have the same magneto selections. If the schematic drawings are accurate i believe that this is the one speced for the 89B thru 92B models. Of course that is listed as obsolete (F12386). Assuming that this is the correct part #, is there an aftermarket part available? Am I even chasing down the right issue? Can't think of what else it would be. The motor shows very little use so it would be a shame not to be able to get it going.

If you will pull the flywheel and give us a pic of the stator we can ID what you have...I'm not sure if bim coils were used on the 5hp force made gamefisher...I would hope not

outboard pic.jpgThanks for the help. It appears to be the same as 225587494, 225587501, 225587503. All show that the coil is unavailable. trying to attach a picture. Is this part available anywhere?outboard pic.jpg

your best bet will be if CDI will rebuild it $$, If thats is the problem. I would call them and see what they say, i know they will give a CDI dealer a better price than you or me, if you happen to know one. :)

Thanks for all of the info. It seems that I may be out of luck on the coil. BIM II don't seem to be available anywhere. Quoted $275 plus shipping to repair. I guess i will try to bring the old 3.5HP back to life for now.

In case anyone needs this same coil, i found it at Standard Magneto 1-800-MAGNETO for around $35.00. They have it listed under a different part number but they knew exactly what I was looking for when I called. The part arrived in a couple days and it did the trick. Motor is running good!

Thanks for the help.

Re: Foce/Gamefisher 5HP No Spark Need to find the year made

I have assumed that the motor is a '92 or '93 Force. The Maneto diagram that I referenced was for the 89B thru 92B type. The part number that is shown on this diagram is F12386 which is listed as no longer available (BIM II Coil??). The coil (pictured above) has one blue and one brown wire coming from it. The replacement part number from Standard Magneto is 92-5068. $35.67 for the part and $12.12 to ship to east coast.

Thats really good info HGill, Bim ii coils for $35 , I might start collecting some of those force made gamefisher engines now that you have found a cheap source for coils.

Thanks
