Fogged 45

I fogged the H out of my 1975 45 hp , as this is the second year it hasn't been running. Previous owner kept it in the basement for a year ...and due to parts availability and lack of time after boat repairs I never had it up and running. Here's the question.....shouldn't 't the only place fogging oil shows up is out of the exhaust outlets? The next day it was oozing out of every seam and drain hole in the lower unit below the water pump. Does this mean that something is disconnected in the leg ? How would it go anywhere but out the exhaust? Do I have yet ANOTHER idiot caused problem to fix?

There are drain holes and weep holes in the lower unit because there are blind cavities. These cavities must be drained or water would collect in them and cause corrosion. The engine block exhausts directly into the midleg and down through the exhaust. The whole lower unit is exposed to exhaust. Thus, when you fog the engine with a lot of oil, this oil will go everywhere including the blind cavities. Your problem is too much oil.

An engine that has been fogged and not run does not need periodic fogging. In fact, an engine that has been run normally usually has enough residual oil in it for storage and does not need fogging. Fogging is one of those things that makes the owner feel better but does not necessarily increase the storage life of the engine.

I have taken smaller engines that were sitting outside for several years without their covers and with grass and trees growing through them, re-gapped the points, and the engines started and ran happily.

Thanks Frank! This engine was never previously fogged from what I know,and was last run nearly two years ago. Plus it now has to sit outside under cover. That's why I somewhat over fogged it! Was mostly concerned with the rod and crank bearings. If the exhaust just dumps into the entire lower leg ,,,,that would explain it!
