Fogging question

I have a 2004 4.3 merc carb, alpha I. It has a 2 barrel carb on it.

Yesterday while winterizing I got the motor nice and hot. I then ran it at around 1500 rpm and started to spray in the merc fogging oil. I got through more than half that can without not as much as a slight bit of hesitation, going back and forth between the two openings in the carb.

I then dropped the rpm to idle and proceeded to empty the rest of the can into the carb. I did get some slight hesitation at idle when sraying, but nothing that ever made the engine close to cutting out. So I cut it out manually when I had just a little of the fogging oil left (to spray in after pulling out the plugs).

Is there something I am missing with the directions? Should my engine have stalled?

I definitely think my carb or timing might be off, too rich or lean, because I have had an occasional engine diesel when I shut off. Also, my new plugs looked pretty darn oily after this 40 hour season (pre-fogging oil). Could this have affected it?

Lastly, do people get better results by just pouring in 20 wt oil versus using the fogging oil in the aerosol can?

Re: Fogging question

i had the same problem with fogging my engine too. the fogging oil didn't come out of the can fast enough to get it to stall. can't remember who told me what to do, but... put the fogging oil into a disposable cup. then pour it in. slow at first till it smokes bad, then at the very end, pour it in faster till stall...

fogging oil won't always stall an engine at hi idle...... Not that it matters that much. If it was smoking bad enough that somebody wanted to call the fire dept, then you fogged it right. Alot of times you just have to run up to the helm real quick and turn the engine off.

1500 rpm is too high imho to run while fogging the engine but I do understand your problem. First, try running the engine at 1000 rpm, which is where I fog mine. I also use 2 cans of fogging oil at once, it's the only way I can get mine to stall.

It doesn't have to stall to get fogged. Two cans does make things easier though, you can shoot both bores at the same time. I just add an extension(piece of rope) to the kill switch. When it is smoking and chuggin' real good, just yank the rope and clean up.
