Re: For all you fuel stabilizer nuts

I'm not sure why you are looking for a fight, but....
He ALWAYS looking for fight...I won't deal with someone who post something, but has the answer anyway..jeezz, only one boat with year old gas? 6 bikes, 4 boats, 8 other motors, then the usual stuff like the road vehicles, mowers, chain saws...just bought 2 half gallons Stabil at Walmart..
Year nothing anyway in my opinion, but your octane is shot, and a few months later, well, its turning to crap..do what ya want ..

Yet you keep posting in my threads. You're just mad because I told you you were wrong, and for the record, you still are. Just because I post a question doesn't mean I should take your bad advice on a totally different subject.

Yeah, I've got plenty of other motors too, 7 trucks, a car, lawnmowers, weedwackers, chainsaws, generators, etc, etc, etc...not a one of them ever gets fuel stabilizer, and my carbs are all just fine.

Those of you that have got your panties all in a bind, how 'bout you post some real evidence? At least I made a video to back up my post.

"how 'bout you post some real evidence? At least I made a video to back up my post."

LOL - you posted a video of a motor starting! I don't think you can seriously call that evidence! LOL! What a ridicules statement.

I posted evidence; anecdotal as it is, but evidence just the same.

I don't care how many motors you look after. There are lots of people here that have lots of motors to look after. However, if its that important to the topic then here is my list - personally I have about 20 outboard motors in my collection, a weed eater and a lawn mower. Plus I maintain a large number of small motors at work somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50-60 motors (everything from outboard motors to portable generators). In fact, I rebuilt two carbs yesterday on machines with bad gas (Honda water pumps). I don't count cars and trucks since they get used more so bad fuel is seldom a problem, but if that's what you need to count to get your numbers up so be it.

Your argument is just that; an argument. Too bad we couldn't have had a serious discussion instead of a pissing match. Flame away, ZmOz. I won't be responding your posts anymore.

PS. I've been here long enough to know that no one complains about month old gas. A high post count doesn't mean you have something intelligent to say. Just means you talk a lot. And judging by this post I don't suspect your posts have been as valuable to this forum as Scaaty's.

I've started stabilizing all portable can gas when I fill the tank, and all boat gas, including my cruiser. I've always done it at the end of the year, but I am afraid I'll forget. I forgot to do my Yahama generator and now it will only run with the choke on.

Re: For all you fuel stabilizer nuts

What Stabilizer does is forms a thin layer on top of the gas to prevent oxygen in the airspace above it from oxidizing the gas below it. It works well, but only for so long. It'll extend life by months, not years. I start worrying about 6 month old unstabilized gas and year-and-a-half old stabilized gas. The active ingredient is added to an alcohol base because it mixes well with gas and disperses the ingredient once it's added. Newer ones are shying away from that and are using a kerosene base.

I recall one guy that brought in a boat that hadn't been run in seven years. The gas tank was absolutely full, the vent was closed, and the hose wasn't attached. I expected the usual ugly old-gas smell when I opened it, but to my amazement it smelled perfect. If it was my boat, I'd think I'd have run it. I advised the customer to discard it, however. I don't know if he did or not. The gas in the fuel line was totally nasty and the carbs had to be rebuilt. Moral of story, oxygen is the enemy. Not (necessarily) gasoline components going bad with age.

Heat degrades gas faster than cold. Gas in cooler climates and kept cool will not degrade nearly as fast as in hotter conditions. That's another consideration.

A long time ago, a super old wrench told me to skip all the snake oil, and a good de-carb will work best with Techron.. get the concentrate bottle. Damn if not right (he pulled motors down daily, and I learned a lot from him..mostly by using my ears instead of my mouth to learn)...and they aint got a patent wrap on it for nothing. Got nothing against S-Foam DP, but yep, Chevron in all but the parts getter....(170,000 Astro 4.3..good for another 200,000).Heres a few more pix...been wet since I was 5 (born 1950), and 47 years saddle time on two wheels..brother races a 56 Alfa in the Vintage, my Uncle is a founder of the Long Beach Car Races..youngest of a gear head clan. 21 Years Journeyman Machinist, and came out the womb clinking wrenches...people walk in my shop and the jaw drops..fully equipped...lathe, welders, more tools than a white man should be allowed to own. Proud of what I can do...and aint much I can't.
First pic is a project I started in 1990. Designed and built by me. mostly spare parts and an idea. Seems I was too early...now loud mouth idiots on TV BOLT crap together, and makes millions. Old chopper frame..cut down 8 foot front end, widened and made the brackets for dual discs, thats a rear hub laced on a 21 front rim, shoved in a Sportster motor, jack shaft, new solid rear end, car tire and homemade rim/hub (didn't even MAKE more that a 180 MC tire in them days). Sitting in the shop now..big cams, and that SOUND..yep, can smoke the tire easy..again..ALL parts were made by me..and a total rebuild on the motor.
Rest is a note under the pix...again, just some of the stuff I whipped together.. (and I just got back from an Antique MC Swap..brought nothing home this time..still need a winter project?????..but whatever ..it will be fast and probably not legal)

Probably 4000 hours in it

79 Shovel..86 inch S+S innards..blows off the new 88 Twin Cams..ITS ALL IN THE CAMS/INDUCTION!!

NorCalrideMe.jpg

My Bagger..(first year Bagger 5 speed wet clutch EVO (84)..more miles than the town *****...and just about every state...always did month long rides, and by myself)

S5301518.jpg

Beginning of a 115, back to 135, 2 new pistons, then a total new everything rings, bearings, etc wise...this was this winters project (whipped in 4 months), as the next few pix on the 15.9 foot Flatbottom it went on..freaking rocket..and as I don't want to HiJack..yep, I still Stabil my gas..WalMart sells half gallons now..just bought 2..

Willy was spot on,and did a great job of explaining to you the risks of not using a fuel stabilizer.I for one will keep using it.But,short periods of a month isn't a long enough time to worry about it.I do use it over winter storage. And I sure haven't had any problems.

Yep, gas going bad in a month is a joke..a 6 month period, a joke..year is pushing it, unless in a sealed container. I always tape off my boat vents over the winter...but when I gotta store motors in toys that will not get used for who knows how long, I Stabil. Full tank if possible..(condesation and the results are more disastrous than old gas). My big boat is 90 gallons..$8 bucks for Stabil is zip compared to the gas cost...also use MDR WaterZorb too..contains no Alcohol or Methanol..beats the (did a few experiments) hell out of snake oil HEET, red or yellow...
