Just ask your question here. I won't be of much help, I won't even look at those things.

That's easy.

Then click "View Parts Catalog" button

Then at top left, click the dropdown menu next to products and click on sterndrive, then GO.

Pick your year.

I know you have a 'thing' against Stringers Don but ya didn't need to give us a dead link. :p

This is what ya get when ya click on the "view parts catalogue" button.

There was an error processing the request: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at _Default.CreateSession(String Brands, String Language) at _Default.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e)

Re: For Don,Rodbolt,or Bondo

People can say what they will about them, but last summer I saw an old boat with one, and I noticed that the drive can actually tilt all the way out of the water! Now no other outdrive that I have seen can do that, and if the other issues with them could be solved, for salt water boaters that are battling marine growth that is a big advantage. But no one will work on them around here, I am lucky to be able to get my Cobra worked on!

and thems the cheap ball gears, wait till the trim motor goes bad, then try to get to it.
or wring off the water pump shaft and fight out 20 stuck 1/4x20 bolts.
or try to feed that electric shift wire out the corroded holes without breaking it of deal with the converter box wear on the hydro units.
and while part of the unit on some of the stringer will clear the water the tilt sector and rubber boot get all kinds of growth on them
but I will offer any advice or remaining knowledge I have about them.
in my saltwater area they are mostly all long long gone.

Same boot and ball gears from 1975. But I will concede, I follow the rules and do not run with the outdrive up. :p

Seriously, lest you well qualified mechanics think that I am in denial of your vast experience, I have to admit that although my outdrive has 2k hours on it, it is trailered and only occasionally used in salt water. I've seen enough pictures of units that sit in saltwater to know that they might not have been the ideal solution for propelling water craft.

But mind you, the way mine has been used (prodigiously) it has worked without parallel. At the same time I cannot imagine that those black anchors, with all that superfluous plumbing hanging out the back, all the alignment issues, etc etc would have been a whole lot better.

Stringers?
The one I got has been on all 5 great lakes.
The original owner told me they took it on many trips.
He resealed it twice becouse of water in the gear box but he said that was all he did. The drive had 1175 on the hour meter when I bought it. I had it out last year and it ran strong.I still believe that maintenanace is the key to any longevity. Take care of it, it will take care of you. :p
The Beef :D

Re: For Don,Rodbolt,or Bondo

I agree.
with proper maint by trained techs or even someone who cares to look at the service manual the stringers would live a while in fresh water.
I worked on the quite a bit in the DFW area.
however they dissapeared rapidly in salt water areas due to the expense of drilling out all the fasteners and such for routine maint.
but we have the same maint issues with more modern drives.
biggest issue is OMC started dropping support for the stringer back in the 80's. when Volvo bought out OMC's stern drive in the mid 90's they dropped all support and BRP did the same in the early 2000's.

and if I have no factory support I aint gonna touch it. its hard enough getting parts and info on factory supported stuff much less a stringer.
by the time a factory trained tech at a modern marina sees a stringer nowdays odds are its been cobbled, chopped and reengineered so bad that the cost of repairing it at 75-100 dollars an hour renders it obsolete.
I turned one away last summer, 327 GM with an electric shift.
intermediate housing had corroded a hole in a water passage.
I estimated 20 hours to change the housing and 5 hours to try to find a good one.

Re: For Don,Rodbolt,or Bondo

Rodbolt
I agree with where your coming from. I was sorry to see what happened to OMC but thats that. I bought this boat becouse it was what I was always looking for and it happend to have a stringer. Believe me
I was warned about the drive. The original owner was a Mechanical Engineer and he took good care of it. Ok now for the big question, If I had to change the drive to somthing else what would you recommend? I understand from SkiffCraft that they make an adaptor plate for Merc and Vovo. What would a job like that cost? The steering would have to be changed too. What would you recommend?
Beef :D
