Roscoe,<br /><br />It will be marginally slower with that much RAM but I would not bother pulling it out. <br /><br />Let's talk about XP for a minute.<br /><br />What happened when you installed it? Would the machine not even boot?<br /><br />Did you check for a BIOS upadte for XP?

Initially, I spent 2 days working on it.<br />Re-installing windows, getting new drivers, double checking with component manufacturers, talking with tech support, etc. I believe tech support walked me thru a bios install. (it was 2 years ago).<br /><br />Almost everytime it booted up, there was a different problem. It wouldn't find the modem, or the cdburner, or wouldn't enable usb ports, or couldn't find the video card, or my printer wasn't supported, or it would say the various drivers were not the right ones. We even removed all the hardware and periferals and re-installed xp, then re-installed the hardware cards and drivers one at a time, did not work.<br /><br />We finally decided that we would try to install WinME, to see if any or most of the hardware would work, Zooooom, it took off. Found everything, no problems.<br /><br />I decided to leave it this way, as I needed to use the computer. A few months later when the nephews showed up, I swapped out the harddrive with a new one to save may data, and pointed to the nephews and said "make this thing work with xp or you two will never get back to civilization." I do know that they updated the bios, cause they came and asked me for some floppies to download to. 3 pots of coffee and 8 hours later, they said it ain't gonna happen, but couldn't tell me why. They gave me that look...without saying a word- "shoulda got a mac" and I said "I know".<br /><br />About a year ago, a friend said he could make it work, he thought we were too stupid. So I saved all my data and sent the box home with him. 4 days later he called me from the shop he works at- no luck. <br /><br />Anyway, I really don't need any of the xp offerings?, bells, whistles, or embellishments. What I do is pretty basic, simple photo edits, burn cds, internet, a few charts and graphs. People give me a look, when I tell them I am running ME. It seems everyone has had problems with ME, except ME.<br /><br />Well, thanks for your interest, but don't waste any time trying to figure this out, it isn't worth the time or effort in my opinion.

I can understand what you are saying, and the problem lies with some older equipment made before win XP came out! Sometimes there are no drivers that will work with win XP! That goes with motherboards too! Im running windows XP at home because I like the new digital features for my cameras and the filing system for photographs Rocks! But here at the shop windows 98 SE is just fine!

Ya usually the BIOS gets people so I thought I'd ask. As long as your system is stable and you are productive that's all that really matters. The real incentive to going to XP is stability - it is a very robust OS.. I've gone weeks w/o shutting down or rebooting and haven't had a single crash or lockup yet on 4 very different systems. I reboot now maybe once a week just out of habit...<br /><br />I have XP and Win2K on systems as old as PII class machines so it can be done but they are mainstream boxes with popular components...

The thing is, that when newer motherboards carry the sign 'Designed for XP' it really means that it was designed for this OS' various special demands.<br /><br />Both Win2k and XP are built on the NT core which is very different from any Win9x (incl. ME) version in the way it handles internal instruction sets, memory management and much more.<br /><br />Both NT, Win2k and XT are extremly stable (which is why it is used for servers since ancient time). Notice that XP (both OS and Office pack, btw) is Microsoft's final solution to piracy. Win2k does not solve the piracy problem as it doesnøt prevent you from installing and running software copies.<br /><br />Most ME problems stems from running ME clients on NT networks, especially on laptops that are supposed to work either networked or stand-alone. ME has a hard time running smooth when it expects a network connection but can't find it.<br /><br />Some, however, has no problems and there is a theory about the number of network drives registered when logged on to a network. If more than a few the puter suffers when off the net, obviously.<br /><br />Another scenery is when ME is running in multimedia setups. MS claims that MEis designed just for this but many users have experienced worries with display drivers, sound setup and i/o devices.<br /><br />After a short promotion after the initial release MS stayed pretty silent and kept a low profile re. ME. Apparantly even they gave up...

Hey, I replied to this earlier, where did it go?<br /><br />Anyway, just for clarification.<br />xp was out for a while (6+ months ? ) before I bought this system. The install and compatibility issues were well known. So I double checked with the manufacturer by phone, and the component manufacturer's websites, before I bought it.<br />I was assured that all were xp compatible and that all the drivers were supplied. The mb is a Gigabyte 7vrx ddr-333, and all other components are well known name brands.<br /><br />I hear what you are saying about rebooting out of habit. My old box needed a reboot every other day. Once I got this one running ME, I went 4 months without a reboot. <br />It seems to run flawlessly, for months. Well, it did, until I downloaded that ie6 update, that likes to die. I recently un-installed ie6, and downloaded the newest version of it. No problems for 3 weeks.<br /><br />So, thanks to all for their advice. My guess is that there is a small glitch somewhere on the motherboard.<br /><br />Have a happy.
