Anything is possible if you are willing to rebuild the stringers to accept the engine mounts as well as replacing the complete drive...
Cheaper to sell that boat and buy one with a 5.7 Merc...

It would be fairly easy if that boat was originally offered with a V-6 or a V-8.(It will probabably already have all the mount points for a V-6/8 engine.

The rest of the swap would be to put a different drive on the back. (the ratio will be all wrong for a V-8) That's a GEN II drive you have and they're in demand. SO you could easily sell it if it's in good shape.

Then you can get yourself a brand new SEI drive in the correct ratio (for probably less than you get for the GEN II used)

It's all "Do-able". You might need a different inner transom plate and you would need a Y-pipe unless you want to go to thru-hull exhaust.

Will it be worth it? You decide. If I could find a 502 EFI cheep enough I'd swap my 454 for it!!

Cheers,

Rick

WOW that would be a lot of HP in a 17.5 footer.

Think of that thrilling feeling you'll have the first time you try to turn the boat at WOT and there isn't enough hull in the water to make the turn.

Re: ??? for the pros (ENGINE SWAP)

The engine will work. You'll have to get the proper flywheel, bell housing and coupler. The engine will have a raw water pump on it that should probably be removed unless you want to use the thru-hull water pickup from the ski boat...... I don't know if you can remove the sea water pump in an Alpha and just not use it......there'd really be no point in using the engine mounted pump unless you wanted to put a Bravo on it.......and you wouldn't want to that.....

The Alpha drive ratio will be ALL WRONG for a V-8. (WAY TOO LOW) It might work with a pretty high pitched prop though. That's not a good way to run. You would probably cavitate the beejeebers out of it on a full throttle launch.....It's far better to just get the right ratio drive.

I don't think that's (way) too much HP for that boat. I had a 1966 Marktwain 18ft boat that (optionally) came with a 409 Chev V-8 and Mercruiser #2 drive. The boat was placarded for 310hp max.

The engine you have will probably rate at less than 300 propshaft HP with the an Alpha on the back.

btw, the pictures are just too small to see.........

If you want to load pictures you really need to use a (free) picture hosting service like Photobucket or similar

Then you just use the picture hosting links. If iBoats and other forums were to allow people to post large picture files, they would probably need to double or triple their server capacity.
