I tend to lean towards the We-Are-Not-Causing-Global-Warming camp. My one emphasis however is that we are not exactly making things better. The earth is going to do what it is going to do, but we could do a better job of living on this planet. We don't have to be all shrieky and hemp-smoky about it, chaining ourselves to oil wells and such, but we have the technology to live more cleanly and we don't because there is a significant percentage of people who lack the ability to see beyond their own little world.
Mike722's post is intrigueing. One could look at the human race as a virus that is attacking the planet. We are one of very few species of life on this planet that has no natural enemies to keep our numbers in check. We are the only species that has an active intelligence and self awareness. Unlike the animal world where life is lived day by day, we have the ability to predict outcome of action, and affect that outcome by changing action.
Yet, here we are. We breed incessently. Two kids are not enough, we have to have six kids. Thats great, have those six kids. It is done for selfish reasons that lack any real intelligent thought process. Instead of thinking that having two kids and know they will have a world to live in or their kids will have a world to live, we just pump out the brood because it satisfies whatever selfish desire we have, and we don't care because we'll be dead anyway. Let someone else deal with it, that is modern society.
My own mother pumped out 5 head of brood, and we have a rough life growing up. She could have exercised some restraint, had a few less kids, and life would have been better. The sad thing is she cannot say why she even had all of us. "It just happened". You can't get much more irresponsible than that. Or the welfare takers that keep pushing out kids. Why should they care, the guvment will pay the way. People take no responsibility for the future.
I had one child, and left it at that. I did my bit to propigate the species, pass the genes, live the imperitive, whatever you call it. I can't wait for the shriekypants people on here to go off. "You can't deny me my ability to have as many kids as I want". Hate to say it, but breeding is not a right, it is a priveledge. Which is truely better? Give two kids a decent life and a chance for a future, or give six kids a mediocre life and give them almost no chance for a future?
We blow through resources like its free crack day in Harlem. We know there is only a finite amount of resources on this planet, but by golly, we WILL have our 8 passenger SUV to carry only two people. We WILL have our 8000 square foot McMansion to house only those two people. It cracks me up. We NEED a new car every other year, didn't you know that?
So is there global warming? Yeah. Can we stop it? Nope. What we can do is start living like the supposedly intelligent species we are and start taking care of this planet. Have less kids, use resources responsibly, and the whole global warming thing will just fall into place.
