Force 120 alarm & shutdown

Just bought a 1990 Maxum with a Force 120 Outboard. Before putting it in the water I had the local marine mechanic take a look at the lower unit and run the system with muffs. Everything looked ok and ran well, although water throughput was lower than he was used to seeing with other outboards. About a half mile out of the marina (very slow throttle) a steady alarm sounded. It ceased immediately upon key shutoff and after I gave
it slightly more throttle. There was no smoke or sign of excessive heating.
Question 1) Is heat the only cause for alarms on a Force 120, or is low oil in the prop area also?

After another half mile engine cut off instantly, as if there was an electrical or fuel shut off switch. The prop and flywheel turn freely so there is no seizing. I am wondering if I am dealing with 2 seperate issues. One being pump impeller or clogged cooling, and one being a fuel problem. It did sit for about a year with a full tank of gas stabilized with marine stabil.

do the basics. plug the plugs inspect them, see if you can roate the crank by hand if not stop here. Connect the 4 spark plug wires to the plugs and ground them crank the engine over like you would to start it have someone check for spark also check compression. The alarm is the overheat buzzer sounds like the impeller is going bad or t stat.

For what it is worth this is my rebuilt 120hp '91 model force. My buzzer went off first time due to poor water flow (new impeller installed.) A lot of water was by-passing the inlet so it was suggested I tape up around the muffs as you can see in my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snTJhP2V17U Frank Acampora is a guru on this sight and says the amount of water flowing looks right. The buzzer has not gone off since. It is worth a try.

Re: Force 120 alarm & shutdown

Thanks Josh,

Now believe I am dealing with 2 seperate issues. No sign of overheating. I removed the lower unit and checked out the impeller and pump. Looks good.

Replaced plugs, new starter and battery. Compression seems good, can rotate flywheel by hand. In order to eliminate fuel as problem, I mixed new gas and inserted the fuel line into the new tank. Fuel filter is clean. Still no turnover.

I don't think its getting any spark. Also think this is what made engine cut out
so quickly. Any additional ideas or historic electrical problems with this engine is
appreciated.

josh, FYI/ an impeller does not have to look bad to be ineffective. mine looked almost new when i replaced it. the fins can ware out in strength. just so u know...dave
