Force 120 Blown Head Gasket

I just got my boat back from the shop today and they told me my #1 cylinder is very weak due to bad rings or piston from over heating. I get it home and I pull it apart and the head gasket has a chunk of it blown away on the #1 cylinder, go figure! The pistons and rings look fine! The boat shop charged me $100 to tell me I need to spend $1900 to fix my boat. I think I'll be buying a 40 dollar head gasket and be on my way. However I have a few questions for any of you Force guys out there. Anything I should know before I slap a new head gasket on there? I know I need to get the torque specs for the bolts but do I need an gasket sealer as well? Anything else I should do while I got the head off? Thanks for your help guys.<br /><br />Joey

Examine the mating surface of the head and the block. Make sure they are not warped. You may want to have the head decked at a machine shop.

Ca I tell visually that it is warped? It seems to look fine to me. Or do I need some type of gauge to test it?<br /><br />Thanks guys,<br /><br />Joey

Well the engine overheated a little when the impeller started to fail. I replaced that and it no longer overheats anymore but runs rough and is lacking some power. <br /><br /> :) <br /><br />Joey

Sometimes head gaskets fail because the engine overheats, sometimes engines overheat because the head gaskets fail. Sometime *hit happens. Get a good straight edge or lay it on a big piece of plate glass and use a feeler gauge under it to look for warpage. The machine shop cost is small (I'm guessing $15-$20) so you might want to do it regardless. You'll have a nice smooth shiny and flat surface for your new gasket.

Can someone tell me how the torque setting I need for the head bolts on a 1993 Force 120? I'm replacing my blown head gasket. Also is there a certain order these need to be tightened in?

You should get a manual which would tell you. There is a specific torque and a specific order. In general start from the middle then go across in an X and work towards the ends.

something to consider here......I think.A friend of mine kept getting a slight blow-out, at least you could see slight flame at the block gasket when it was dark.His engine was a evinrude 150 and it was because the two top carbs were running lean (not enough gas)and it was causing a engine miss .I don't quite understand how this can cause a gasket to leak.Just a watcher here ,so maybe someone more experienced could expand here.The two top plugs were sightly wet before and after the carb jets opening was enlarged the engine ran fine and no more blow-backs on the gasket.
