Force 120 Voltage Regulator Change

I have a 19 ft. Bayliner with a 1996 Force 120 HP. It runs good but I noticed that my volt meter would ocasionally peg out at 16+ volts. I was afraid of frying my batteries so I got a new voltage regulator and installed. After starting up the engine, it does not seem to be charging at all. At idle, I am only reading 12 volts and when I give it a little gas it stays the same. I checked the volt meter with a handheld and they agree. Someone told me that I need to excite the charging circuit. Does anyone have any advice?

Double check your wiring.
Then put the old one back in and try it.

I bet the wiring is wrong or the new regulator is bad.

You didn't by chance touch the battery cables to the wrong post(s) did you? That will fry the charging circuit in an instant.

Thanks Roscoe. I checked the wiring and all is correct. I put the old regulator back in and charging is still the same, only 12 volts showing on the volt meter.

Re: Force 120 Voltage Regulator Change

I finally broke down and purchased an OEM voltage regulator. Installed and this solved the problem: 13 volts at idle and 14.5 volts at 200 RPM. Returning the after market regulator for credit...I hope. Thanks for the help Roscoe.
