Force 120 water circulation?

I own a 1994 120 Force. Overheat alarm comes on
and at the same time, no water at rear outlets above idle. Recently replaced impeller and housing and both are still in good shape. removed thermostat and ran water hose into water inlet pipe above pump housing. Water takes along time to make it to the thermostat area but what concerns me is alot of water comes right back down the exhaust housing and out of a small machined hole beside the water inlet pipe. Is this normal or do I have a bad leak in the water inlet circuit to the powerhead. Service manual is very vague and any help would be appreciated.

I think the slow leak you see is the tappet or bypass valve doing it's job. This would indicate a blockage in the powerhead somewhere.
It looks like it's time to pull the head and exaust port plate, judging by where you've been so far. Two questions tho: Was this a gradual thing,or did it come-on suddenly? And second, when you replaced the original impeller, were there any pieces missing from it (like a vane or two)?

Re: Force 120 water circulation?

Thanks for the info 12 footer. The heat alarm has
been a chronic problem over the years. When I replaced the impeller and housing, the lining tab on the housing had sheared off causing the housing to turn with the impeller. The tab is a small piece of stamped tin by the looks of it and it was gone. The wife and I had the boat out last weekend for a 20 mile cruise with no problems but this weekend we had to idle back to the resort- 6 miles. It would only pump water at idle. after getting back, I could still place my hand on the block and head without getting burned and no paint burning occured. Could a small piece of tin cause a restriction? Thank's again for the help!!
