Hi folks!

Greetings from the summer of Finland, this time is truly magical..

I have a problem with my alternator, dunno if this is the correct word for it, but here is the story:

On idle speed I measured the voltage from the battery poles and it indicated 14,2 Volts which seems OK to me... Then the troubles start, gaining up rpm´s the regulator seems not to be working, at 25-30 knots voltage from poles 17-18,2 volts.

Is this a regulator problem or are there some things I should check before I go to boat shop and waste a lot of money on local boat shop?

Help is truly needed, thak you in advance for your answers.

-Jaba-

Depending on your serial number and model number you may not have a regulator on that motor. Some of the 92 models had regulators and some did not. Both have rectifiers. If your motor does not have a regulator there is not much you can do about it. If it does have a regulator yours is probably shot.

Battery could also be failing, having a bad cell, which is causing the over voltage problem. The battery is part of the voltage regulating system.

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

Thanks for your answers, the battery is new so I don´t think that is the problem. (Voltage is 12.8 volts fully charged) I think I have a regulator in my system, located in the right side of engine. Tried to look at the seloc manual and think I have the thundelbolt system in my engine.

What could happen if I just keep driving with the overcharging alternator beside boiling the battery? Can it brake the ignition system or something more expensive and hard to get?

What is the difference between rectifier and regulator?

-Jaba-

Rectifier take AC voltage and converts it to DC voltage for the charging system. A voltage regulator will only allow so much DC voltage to pass. A 14 volt regulator will only allow 14 volts to pass even if 17 volts is availible. Can you post your model and serial number?

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

I recently ran into the same proplem, had to replace both rectifiers on my motors, one works great and charges at 13.5 at 3000rpm, but the other, hits up to 16 or more volts. It seems that some rectifiers limit voltage and some don't, even though I have the exact same rectifier on each motor purchased at the same time from the same place. If yours does have a regulator (serial numbers) the I would check that first. If not, is there one that could be added?

Look here under electical parts second item number 17
Force parts
I also found this site that calls it a regulator/ rectifier. Look under force parts and go to electrical. My guess is even though it is a rectifier it has a built in regulater.
force parts 2

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

Hello Mr. Larva!

Here is the link to the page and the part I´m talking about (pos.17)

Linking didn´t work so here:

Followed the link you posted. Found the part from Ignition components (91D 92C).

Does this part include a regulator or is it just rectifier?

Could this be a grounding or main switch problem?

-Jaba-

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

Hi again,

Went to lake today and checked all the contacts, mainswich, found nothing unusual. As I was checking things and measuring the voltage that still raised to 17-18 volts on Rpm´s tried the old battery that I had in case the new battery runs dry.

Now the bugger seems to be working fine, voltage didn´t rise over 14,2 volts. Tomorrow I´m going to go and take the boat for a spin around the lake so that the battery charges full.

Let´s see what happens. I was/am quite sure that the new battery is OK, but guess that the darn thing cuold broke in few months, sounds a bit weird though.

Anyway thank you so much for your help, will get back to you guys if the problem continues.

Happy boatings,

-Jaba-

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

Before you hook up your other battery make sure you clean the contacts on the battery and on the battery leads. If there is a lot of corrosion you could have high resistance allowing voltage to go higher. Good luck

Re: Force 120hp 1992 charging problem

Looks like I will be trying the switching batteries trick, just to double check mine. I have already checked for corrosion. I never would have thought about that making that much of a difference (the battery not corrosion, I know what that will do! )

Thank you eurolarva and Jaba!
