Hello,
I have a 1986 125 hp force that just lost spark on #1 and weak spark on #3 or no spark at times. The stator had a little melted glue on the pick-up at #1 & #3 charging coils. Stator is new and dont look or smell burnt. Before I lost spark on #1 I swapped CDI boxes to see if the no spark condition of #3 would follow the CDI box and it did but also now #1 is completly dead. I switched CDI boxes back and cleaned off the glue from the stator and I now have the week spark on #3 and none on #1. Dont know what to do next. I continuity tested triggger, stator and coils and it checked within limits. I have not voltage tested anything. I dont understand what DVA voltage is, cant test this with a standard multimeter. Anyone have any suggestions on which direction I should go???

First off, check all of your connections again. You may have one that is not secure; also check your ground. Next, use your VOM to see if you have input voltage to the CDI units. If all of this checks, then check the coils for resistance. DVA is someones short hand for Digital Volt Ameter.

I suggest you get a digital if you are still using an old analog. Harbor Freight sells cheap ones that work just fine.

Remember to never fire the coils without the lead grounded or you will fry the CDI units.

John

Re: force 125 hp no spark

Thanks,
All contections have been cleaned and re-tightened (grounds too.) Before I knew better, I did a compression test with all the plug wires disconnected. This is what may have started my ignition problems if the CDI boxes are that prone to failing if this is done to them. My local marina said the the stator wont fail on just 2 cylinders, most of the time you will lose all spark. Seems like the CDI boxes to me but I am just guessing. I dont want to drop $400.00 on a guess. Marina said they would trouble shoot for 2 hrs. of labor. Seems to be the way to go. Anyone have any input on what you whould do?
Thanks!!!
