Hard to figure out what you typed. If it is kicking running in forward you may have a worn clutch dog or possibly a bad or poorly adjusted shift cable.
Unhook the cable and shift by hand.

While there could be a multitude of problems causing this, the most common is fuel mixture. When is the last time you gave the fuel system a good cleaning and readjusted the mixture?

Keep it simple for now. Do a decarb using the instructions in the forum FAQ and then adjust your mixture starting with a base setting of one turn out. That may be all you need to do to get it to run smoother.

Try it and let us know.

Have you checked for water in the fuel ?.

A lean 'sneeze' at an idle is one thing, a lean sneeze while on the throttle can melt a piston.

CLEAN YOUR CARBS NOW, do NOT continue to run this motor, you risk damaging a cylinder and piston.

Install a water separating fuel filter.

1987?

Does it have the two black ignition modules?

On rare occasion one of those modules would go bad causing one cylinder to 'double fire', causing it to lean sneeze, and melt that piston.

Test ignition timing at an idle with an inductive timing light, on one cylinder at a time. You should see the timing mark in only one place around the flywheel per cyl.

Think of the flywheel as a clock face, #1 timing mark as 12 o'clock. A cyl fires at 9 another at 12 and the last at 3. If the module is bad you will find one cyl firing at two places around the flywheel, causing a lean miss, melting that piston.

Since you already have a water seperator, simply check reservoir for water. Then check fuel tank simply by emptying fuel out into a clear one gallon glass container and visually inspecting .You will be able to see any water.

ARM,

I was speaking of the mixture screws on the carbs. You should set them at one turn out from fully seated and then adjust the mixture until the rpm is steady. The book says don't lean them below 7/8's of a turn. I don't lean mine below 1 turn out.

A 12 v electric fuel pump works nicely to pump out fuel into a container.

Just because the carbs are new does not mean they are set correctly. Did you do it yourself? Did you check to see if the float levels were set correctly and not damaged in shipping? If you can answer yes to these questions, then we can move on to other things.

As to your fuel, do you have a visible water seperating type filter? If you do, you can see if there is water in the fuel. Is the fuel old? If it has been recently purchased, then lets talk about the oil. Did you mix the correct amount with the fuel? How about your plugs? Are you using surface gap type and are they new?

The water separator canister that I am talking about has a clear plastic bottom. You can look at it without taking it off to see if there is water in there.

I'd still bet that the mixture is not right. Since you had a mechanic install and adjust the carbs, why not take it back to him and tell him what it is doing.
