My 88 force 125 is having problems, it is slow at accelerating and it won't top out very good, it kind of wants to go faster, kinda jumps, rpm,s go up real quick, like it wants to but just wont stay there. also at an idle it lunges (i don't know how to explain it). Any help?

update

ok thanks for the help you guys, really appreciated--- I put a timing light on the wires- no spark to number 1 (the top) I swapped the wires behind what I believe are coils (there are four, one for each plug) the wires that go into the two square boxes, blue, the problem went to number two. is that telling me it's the blue box the blue box?

Re: Force 125 running rough

Start simple first.
1- New Plugs, get a cheap spark tester from auto parts store and check spark
2- Check fuel delivery (lines, hose etc) for blockages/leaks
3- Has it been setting a long time? Get rid of old fuel.
4- Replace fuel pump diaphram (cheap and easy)
5- Find a repair manual
6- Others will chime in soon

I'm not an expert here but this is a start.

A de-carb may help (meaning, warm the engine, remove the plugs and spray some Deep Creep into the cylinders, replace plugs, wait an hour or so then take it and run the crap out of it.)

Good Luck and see if that helps. Let us know.

Re: Force 125 running rough

Been there, done that..
If its feeling like a plug or two is missing, then coming back..on.. off...jerky, its probably a bad Stator, or coil pack. A known problem (happened to mine, plus one powerpack was shot)
Try a new set of NGK BUHX plugs first. Still happens, look for spark at all 4 jugs while on the trailer. Easiest to use a timing light on each plug wire, see it it flashes. Just hook it up and crank it a few turns..look for the flash.
Try that first and post the results...stick to this thread, dont start another

Re: Force 125 running rough

If it has the Force black or blue boxes powering the coils then you need an inductive tach to check the RPM on EACH cyl seperately. An ignition box may be failing and cross firing, double striking one cyl as it is also firing the other cyl on that box. Un checked it will cause the double struck cyl to run lean at WOT and melt down.

Re: Force 125 running rough

Thanks for everything guys I'm new to this, this is cool, I hope I can help someone sometime!

I had no spark on #1 and swiched the wires and it moved to #2- I switched the wires that go from the blue box to the coil and had the same results----blue box??

Well, from what you are saying its seems that power pack is bad if different coils produce the same result. So get a new one (a good Merc dealer can help ya out on finding one). I had the same problem with mine, but the Stator (its that big ring of coils under the flywheel) was not working properly either. Those motors are known for this. So try a new pack, and hope for the best
And sticking with the same post, has those trying to help, can see all progress. Starting a new thread, has ya back to zero. Like ya said..some "updates"...but not can be found, gets ya nowhere. Stick where we are at..any post bumps it to the top
