help!!! my 88 125 runs great until it warms up then stalls at low rpm when shifting between gears a real hazard when docking. I have tinkered with the carb adjust, replaced the fuel line from tank(inboard) to engine and cleaned the fuel filter. I am going to try an auxiliarty gas tank next-maybe its bad gas? not sure if it is fuel pump, carbs or timing? engine has been great since new until now. any advice is greatly appreciated before I start spending money.

Re: Force 125 stalling

The free stuff would include taking the bowls off of the carbs, and seeing if you have trash in them. I think that if it were bad gas, it wouldn't run well at any rpm. Next check to see that carbs are in sync. Make sure butterfly's are all closed at idle, and that your idle air screw is set at 1 1/2 turns out on all as an initial setting. If you have a light, be sure to check the timing. Idle timing isn't as important, but it will be tough to get to idle if it isn't right. Wide open timing needs to be set right, or you can burn up that 4 banger. My wrench tells me to set a few degrees retarded from spec because of today's fuels. It definately can't hurt. After you check this stuff, you may then have to get out the pocketbook to get the electrical diagnosed. More than likely, just a little trash in the slow jet though. Good luck.

AFTER CHECKING THE CARB. OR FUEL ;I WOULD CHECK THAT ALL CYLINDER ARE FIREING.IF ONE OR TWO CYLINDER ARE NOT WORKING THEN IT WOULD HAVE TO BE THE STATOR OR SWITCH BOX

Re: Force 125 stalling

I read DougG's reply in Topic: force 120 idle speed and sounds great to my ears.
Many of us Force owners are experiencing idle/speed difficulties.
Doesn't it sound like a re-occuring problem?
A motor that starts great, but when it warms up, slow down at the dock and you've had it !!! No reverse to slow you down, just your hull and the dock !!!
Feedback anyone ???? Do we have a procedure somewhere in someone's Repair manual that enables us to check and diagnose the stator?
I've heard of a stator before, where is this little sucker located on the Force???

Re: Force 125 stalling

Fkerks to fix the stalling at idle, in gear, do not adjust the idle mixture. With good idle mixture settings then you RAISE the idle speed screw from INEFECTIVE to a 100 or so rpm above to stop stalling. Its found on the TOWER SHAFT. Type in my username under SEARCH for a more complete description.

Too late!!!!!!!! I have already messed with the carb settings I have tried adjusting the idle speed and it has to be turned way up in order to prevent the prob. any thoughts on the stator?I have never heard of it before this.

Re: Force 125 stalling

FKERKS; THE SETTING ON THESE CARB. ARE ONE TURN OUT ON EACH CARB, I HAVE A 120HP FACTORY SETTINGS WERE 3/4 TURN ON EACH ;BUT YOU DON;T WANT TO RUN TO LEAN.ONE TURN ON EACH SHOULD PUT YOU IN A RUNNING IDLE; AS FAR A THE IDLE AJUSTMENT THERE IS TWO SCRIBE LINE ON THE CAM AS YOU ADJUST THE ROD .YOU WANT THE CENTER OF THE SCRIBE JUST TO CENTER ITSELF ON THE PLASTIC ROLLER.THE STATOR HAS A HIGH AND LOW SIDE FOR VOLTAGE; LIKE ON MY ENGINE IT WOULD START RIGHT UP ;NO PROBLEM .BUT IT WAS HARD TO KEEP IT TO IDLE.THROW IT INTO GEAR FAST AND IT WOULD RUN AT TOP END GREAT ,BACK OFF ON THROTTLE IT WAS A NITEMARE; TRYING TO KEEP IT RUNNING SHORT STORIE IT WAS A BAD STATOR

Re: Force 125 stalling

A well-tuned Force 125 revs high when cold, then "settles" in about 2 minutes or so.

It could be timing, the idle circuit in the carbs, too much oil in (or old) fuel,carbon-fouling, plugged exaust port,or a coil breaking down.
I've also had an ignition switch that arced-over at low speed, but that was on a merc dual-stator.
