Force 15HP won't hold higher rpm

I have a 1987 Force 15 HP with coils and points ignition system. The engine is very low hours, but sat for about 5 years. Engine starts and idles fine (after cleaning the carb). It will rev up fine but then quickly lose revs (in neutral or in gear). I cleaned the carb and checked the fuel pump strainer. The plugs are new. I cleaned up the points, but they are still pitted. I gapped them to about .018" not knowing what they're supposed to be at. I suspect the points and possibly a bad coil that can't fully saturate at higher rpms. I hate to change it on a hunch as they cost about $80.00. Anything I'm overlooking? Maybe a bad fuel pump?

Welcome to Iboats navigator336. You might want to replace the diaphram and gasket on the fuel pump. Kit from napa is under 10 dollars. Might also want to rebuild carb. Kit from napa about 14 bucks. You should definatly get yourself a manual for your motor. They are under 30 bucks and worth every penny. If the points are pitted they should be replaced as well. The manual will give you all the specs your are looking for including the point gaps what type of plugs, compression and just about anything else you could want. Iboats probably sells it here.

Thanks Eurolarva!

I'll go the cheap route first. Napa auto parts carries outboard fuel pump parts? Geez, I'd much rather go to West Marine and pay their 100% mark-up!

I would still be a little worried about the points. If you get a rebuild kit for your fuel pump I would only replace the diaphram and the diaphram gasket. There are small gaskets that come with the kit for the fuel seats. I wouldnt mess with these. The press fit seats can be tough to get out and the kit I got the gaskets would not fit correctly. Usually if there is a fuel pump problem it is the diaphram.

Thanks again EuroLarva,

I ordered a tune-up kit and a fuel pump kit which I think is just the diaphragm and gasket. Iboats.com had the parts cheaper than Napa. Do you know the point gap? I plan on selling the motor as I never use it and don't want to buy a manual I'll never use again.

Thanks.
