Force 1988 50hp compression problem

I had this running last year kept stalling at low idle messed with the carb and idle replaced thermostat (just cause). Anyway took it out last year and got half way across the lake and it went to half speed and then died.<br /><br />Was able to start a couple more times but not for any length of time.<br /><br />Anyway just did a compression check and am showing 30 top cyl and 90 bottom cyl. Squirted some oil in top but no increase in compression. <br /><br />What kind of pain am I looking at here? Any help would be appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks

Im no boat motor expert, but I do work on alot of car motors. If your compression is low and you squirt oil in that cylinder and the compression does not come up, you more than likly have bad rings. When you done the compression test was the motor at operating temp.

Hi Billy<br /> Do you want the long story or the short one? My guess is it will be less painful to just buy another motor. Dissect your Force just to see what makes it tick. Maybe sell off some of the parts. Of course if your like me you could repair it just to see if you can. It's hard to make a call sitting here, but this doesn't sound good. Looking from a money stand point proably not worth the repair.

Your engine is fine go buy some Mercury power tune and shoot in the cyl and the carb when its running. Let it sit for 15minutes then go ahead and run in a lake. Your fuel pump may need a new diaphram kit and check your fuel line sqeazer. Sounds like maybe a fuel shortage

i'm with Walker on this one.<br /><br />it might me stuck rings, a decarb (re. Merc Power tune), but my bet would be cylinder/piston. You might try pulling the exhaust cover or head, and take a look at the piston/cylinder.<br /><br />i fearz that's where you'll find yer bugga-bo<br /><br />if that proves to be the case, finance dictates that you part-it-out. curiousity might motivate you to a re-build<br /><br />Good Luck<br />HAVE FUN!

Thanks... I think? So its either the motor is shot or I just spray some Merc Cleaner stuff in and I'll be fine.<br /><br />FYI motor wasn't running when I did the test only turning over.<br /><br />Any other thoughts? I'll probably tear it down next week to check it out.

Oil should've raised the compression a little bit.<br />Since it did not, do as Alcan sugjested. Remove the head, and carefully look for signs of it leaking. If piston crowns and bore look good,Look at the plug in the low-comp cylinder.Is it clean and new-looking compared to the plug from the higher comp cylinder? If so, it is a manifold or head gasket leaking.<br />If the crowns show melt down, or the bore are scored at all, dismantle the engine, and sell the compionents on e-bay. chances are better than average, that the procedes will pay for another used Force motor of same HP, or between 300-500buks.<br />worth miore in parts, than the parts to get it going.<br />But worth a try with new gaskets, if indications listed lean towards a blown head or maifold gasket.

Well, my 1990 90 HP Force did something very simliar. I had a ring break on mine. Bought a different 92 90HP Force and just had it installed.<br /><br />Short story, lots of money. The 90 90HP will soon be listed on the classifieds for parts.
