Hi guys i have a 35 hp force outboard engine and i can not seem to keep it running. it starts for a couple seconds and then dies and keeps doing that. if it starts and i give it full throttle it will still die after a couple seconds. i have heard that this might be a carburator problem but i dont know. It has newer gas in it could the mixture not be right? does anybody know how to fix this?

And one other question when i am trying to start it should water be coming out the exhaust or not because the engines not warmed up yet? Thanks

Oh and the engine has not been started for about a year is there any tune up things i can do i already replaced the impeller and the spark plugs. Thanks

Could be many things.
To start, you should check for spark on both plugs, and compression.

Are you advancing the throttle when starting?
Are you using the choke? Is the choke working?


Open fuel tank vent

Check the kill switch, place in "run" position

Squeeze fuel primer bulb till firm.

Advance the throttle 3/4 way, without putting it in gear. -- This is done by either pushing a button in the center of the controls, or pulling the shift handle toward the driver, or raising the fast idle lever, all depending on what control unit you have.

Activate the choke by pushing in on the key. The choke is only closed while the key is being pushed in.

Turn the key to start while continuing to hold the key in.

Release the key and choke when it starts.

3-5 seconds of "choke", is usually enough.

Be ready to pull the throttle back toward the idle/neutral position, when the engine starts and the revs increase.

Continue to pull the throttle back as the engine warms up.

You should not have to use the choke much, if at all, once the engine has warmed up.

Engine should start within 10 seconds of turning the key.

You can put a small amount of premixed fuel in a spray bottle and spray it directly into the carb throat in an effort to start it and diagnose source of the problem.

Same symptoms my 55hp had when I went to test drive it before buying it. Took it back to the guys house and sprayed starter directly into the carb. It fired and ran for a bit. Conclusion: Gas not making it into the carburator/cylinder.

After tracing the fuel path, starting at the gas tank, we discovered the primer bulb was stuck. I could pump the bulb until it got firm, but the gas wasn't making it to the cylinder. We disconnected the fuel line from underneath the glass bowl and tried to pump the bulb. No fuel came out, just a firm bulb that wouldn't collapse when squeezed.

Put a new primer bulb and problem solved. We tested it before hooking the gas line back up and gas shot out of the line 3-4' with a squeeze of the bulb.
She's run fine ever since.
