Force 40 revs before going into forward gear

Hello, I have a '93 Force 40 that has been developing problems when going into gear. When going into forward, the engine revs high, without the prop turning. If you move further into forward it will drop into gear. If you try to lower the speed it will sometimes drop back out of gear and rev up.

Once you have it in gear for a couple seconds it doesn't have any more problems as long as it stays in gear. We can troll for hours without having any more issues. Once you go to neutral, the problem starts all over again, any ideas?

If its on a remote control it sounds like the throttle bit is moving too soon /too much its usually gear then throttle ....

I suspect that if the problem has recently developed that you should drop the lower unit and check the shift rod and seal. Sometimes (rarely) the seal swells as it ages and starts to jam. Other times, (most usually) silt packs in around the shift rod and restricts its movement. If you drop the lower unit and see a hardened mass around the shift rod, chip it out, clean the rod, and shifting will return to normal.

Ok, I will have to give that a try. I haven't ever dropped a lower, is there anything special about it, I'd hate to not be able to put it back together!
