Force 50 horse coil replacement question

I am replacing some things on this old motor and today's project was both ignition coils. Well the new CDI coils aren't exactly the same. The old coils had ground wires coming from them and then another wire with connectors from the CD box.
Before I try to describe anything here is a picture of the new coil.

As you can see in the picture there is a screw and connector already under the screw. Is this where I should be connecting the wire from the CD box? The instructions suck but it sounds like that is what I am to do "cut off primary lead, strip, crimp and solder terminal to it". I am completely competent in wiring I just need to clarify I'm making the right connection.

So my next question is, what about the ground?? Is it self grounded/already grounded? There is a thin piece of metal which wraps around the top of the coil going from the bracket to a nut on the other side which you can not see in the picture much but it is on the left side wrapping around the coil on the opposite side from the one facing the camera.

Thats it for now I suppose...just dont want to make any mistakes. Thanks!

Re: Force 50 horse coil replacement question

You're on the right track. I replaced my old coils on my 1988 125 HP with the same unit that you have. You have to cut the wire off of the old coil that originally went to the CD unit. Make sure you cut it so that you maximize the length. Don't cut it in the middle. You are basically transferring this wire with the special connector from the old coil to the new one. Solder it to the small eyelet that is attached to the screw connection on the new coil. The ground connection on the new coil is the metal strap attached to the angle mounting bracket. Make sure there is no paint under the angle bracket when you mount it on the engine. Good ground connection is important.

Re: Force 50 horse coil replacement question

well everything went pretty smooth. However, the spark plug wires they provided are not long enough...how stupid is that? The rear most coil will BARELY reach to the lower spark plug and the frontmost coil is simply too far away to reach the top spark plug. I have them routed properly and everything. I guess I'm going to have to go buy one of those single spark plug wire pieces from an auto store. Ridiculous.

David,

Read the sticky on getting the most out of your question and then start an new thread. It's less confusing that way.
