My '86 force 50 lower unit is getting water in the gear case. To replace seals:

*What seals/o-rings are needed?

*What components will need to be disassembled?

*Can it be done without special tools or equipment (i.e. dealer tools, arbor press)?

Thank you.

Re: Force 50 lower unit seals

The lower unit can be done without any special tools. A manual is imperative because of the blow ups and the steps to show you how to take it apart and any hidden screws. Check here for a seal kit force/chrysler seal kits
You should do is remove the oil and put a pump into the vent hole and leave the drain plug in. Submerge the lower unit in water and look for bubbles. you may only have a bad drive shaft seal or a plug seal or the prop shaft seal that is bad. Any one of these can be replaced with out tearing apart the lower unit.

Re: Force 50 lower unit seals

I submerged the lower unit and pumped in air. The pressure (10 psig) actually pushed the drive shaft out of the unit with no bubbles so I'd say that the seals are good. I held it in and tried again. I did get bubbles from the oil fill plug. New plugs & gaskets on now.

Thanks for all the advice!

Now I have another problem- I'm having trouble connecting the shift linkage back up. I cant get the gears & the handle positions to line up. What's the trick there? Do you seal the upper & lower units with silicon?

Thanks
