Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

No ignition. Not even after replacement of powerpack. Leaves me with replacement of stator or coils. I presume stator is the most logical replacement.. or do I forget other possible reasons for no ignition?

If you have mercury ignition on that engine its most likely the stator that is causing the problem. There is a change up kit that mercury has to replace that stator.

TMD

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

Tnx doctor.
Mercury electrics indeed on the 1992 Force type 507e92c.
Took off the flywheel to see what visual state stator is, and it looks quite new. Do not know how to measure/check its state with a multimeter, or if this is at all possible?
Elliminating possible reasons for my ignition problem by replacing the components one by one is a costly hobby in NW-Europe, as the powerpack already costed me over 400€ (even more $)..
Considered bying new engine, but the Force 50hp looks little used and appart of the problem in good shape..

Is the stator black? If so thats most likely the problem...the new ones are RED. It's refered to as the RED STATOR IMPLEMENTATION. Most Merc dealers will know about it.

TMD

Stator is black like most components on the engine, except for the coils who are blue.
No chance to measure with a multimeter on ohms?

No chance problem has anything to do with the leads coming out of US Marine control.. see my topic on that issue a bit further down?

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

What are the colors of the wires. And should these wires be hooked up to the switch?

Are they just hanging there?

Did the engine run prior with the wires that way?

A US Marine box...I would think is for Prestolite ignition...not the Mercury ignition. Though its been a while since I have seen one.

Prestolite is blue powerpack and coils.

Mercury is wires that have nuts that connect them to the powerpack.

TMD

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

A doctor who never sleeps? Tnx your help anyway.
The main cable bunch coming out of the US Marine controller is coming out of the rear end of the controller. Out of the lower side of the controller there is a 4-lead cable; red+black gives 12volt from the battery when the start-powerswitch is turned on. I have to check on the colour of the 2 others when I go to the boat in an hour, but I think they are blue en purple (tachometer & overheat????). I do not think that those have to be connected or short-connected in a way that they would make any difference for solving the ignition problem.
So they are indeed just hanging there.. and as I just came to purchase boat+trailer+force outboard with the loose wires, I have no idea wether it run prior to me collecting the boat in North-Holland. I know one should try run the engine before buying, but the all over deal was unique in price, and a 1000km drive to collect it there gave me little time..
On the new CDI box I just came to try without result (lucky for me dealer will take it back)it is clearly marked Mercury 'for Force 40/50hp), so I presume stator will also be of same Mercury origin?? It is also black.

Those wires you are refering to are to run accessories under the console. They should not have a bearing on the running of the engine.

TMD

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

Final questions; charging battery is done directly through the battery starting cables running into the engine? How many Amps does the engine deliver to the battery; depending on RPM probably?
Do I need to place zinc anodes (for use on the salty Northsea?
Do I have to unscrew something on my back-up 8hp Mercury to get to the flushing/rinsing connection?

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

Charging could be anywhere from 6-9 amps...as for the freshwater inlet...try watermuffs.

TMD

Re: Force 50hp / 1992 / ignition problems

Have now received red stator (instead of original black one) with extra 'stator adaptor' and some wiring, but this one has apparently 1 incorporated coil less, and has only 4 wires (yellow, yellow, blue and blue/white) instead of the 6 originals (yellow, yellow, blue, blue/white, red and red/white). The leaflet that came with this new stator only shows connection for a 4 cylinder Mercury/Mariner 40/45/50 classic engine (kit 398-832075A20).
Presume this kit is not compatible with the Force 50hp?
