I have a 1985 Force 85 model 856X5l serial 4191 that has no spark at plug #1.

I switched plugs to make sure it was not the plug. I also switched coils to make sure it was not the coil. I followed all the leads back to the end connections and all seems fine.

I am wondering if it’s the CD module.

How can I test the CD module before shelling out cash for a new one?
Module #2 has a spare lead. Can I use it for cylinder #1

Can I swap the CD modules (it has 2) to see if the module affects a different cylinder?

Lot’s of blue smoke while running on 2 cylinders.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, I replaced my impeller housing and impeller today, everything works great. Where would my temperature gauge be? I see no mention of it in my Clymer manual. Should I replace it for a thermostat when I find it? Is it easy to do?

Cheers…

Yes you can swap the cd units.
As long as you have 3 cd outputs that work, you can hook them up, just have to make sure they are firing in order.

I don't think that motor has an over temp sensor. If it does, it will be a small sensor attached to the head, connected to an orange wire.

It does have a thermostat, might as well replace it.
Located above the top sparkplug behind a small housing cover.

If you find a small 1/4" pipe plug just in front of the thermostat housing, you can buy a water pressure gauge kit and connect it up to that opening. Its an easy job and will give you current info on the water flow thru your motor. About $55.

I changed over the cd units and the appropriate wiring that was attached to them. The #1 spark plug still did not fire. Is it possible that the unused wire on cd#2 is also faulty?

Is there another cause that might stop the #1 spark plug from sparking?

steve,
check the wire and terminals to see if any of them are broken at the terminal block or under the flywheel. possibly just a broken wire.

Your sensor for water temp is right by the spark plugs, orange wire to it. Looks like a snap ring holding it in.

Do I need any special equipment to pull the flywheel?

It looks as if it's only held down by the one bolt on top.

Re: Force 85 not firing on #1 cylinder.

I have an 87 Force 50, and my flywheel is removed with one of those three pronged flywheel pullers. Since I chose to beat on mine instead, I put a 2x4 end up to the underside of the flywheel, and hit that with a big hammer, LOL. I fhad to do it again, I'd get the puller for it. Also, I had no spark on one cylinder, and all that boiled down to was the purple tach wire was touching the engine block, and it melted and exposed the bare wire core. On my motor, this wire shares a common connection with the coil for cylinder #1, and it beig grounded out caused a lack of spark. I would look for all the most obvious and inexpensive things before blowing money on other parts. My motor had a few elctrical issues like this when I bought it in non-working order. And like monkeyboi said, check the wires right there at the terminal block. I had one that was broken off there. Good luck with your repair, I hope it is something easy like a broken wire or shorted out wire like mine was.

Re: Force 85 not firing on #1 cylinder.

I see no signs of worn or disconnected wires under the flywheel looking from the outside although I cannot get the flywheel off. Is it important to get the flywheel off to see the wire endings. I think I can see them while the flywheel is on. Do the wires proceed into or under the flywheel?

My problem now is that I cannot get the bolt off the flywheel. My biggest wrench is 1". What size do I need. How do I stop the flywheel from moving while I wrench the nut off?

I do however have the three prong tool for removing the flywheel once the center nut is removed.

Steve

Take it to an auto mechanic and have them take the nut off with an impact wrench.
