I have a 1990 85 hp Force engine with a busted
piston. How can I determine wether to rebuild
it or buy another one? Also is it difficult to
bore and rebuild?
I know the cost of parts and labor form someone
is about 3500.
Any suggestions.

Re: Force 85 ph problem

Have you actually looked inside the engine yet?
Busted piston ? Specifically, what does that mean?
Low compression on one cylinder?
Blown head gasket?
Did it overheat?
Actually a hole in the piston?
Broken ring?
Have you examined the head for damage?
Water in the cylinders?

Some rebuilds require more than others depending on the damage. I've seen them cost from $900-$2500, but not $3500 for a motor like that one.

Did a shop give you that price?
Likely they bid the worst case senario and then added an extra 50% as a deterrant to you.

Would I put $2000+ into that motor, even if it truely required a major rebuild? No way. Better to look for a decent used motor for $2000.

You should be able to get all the parts for around $900, then add the cost to have the head milled, cylinders bored and honed.
Probably gonna cost you $1500 even if you do most of the work yourself, and don't run into any problems, and you don't need any ignition parts..

Re: Force 85 ph problem

Thanks for the reply. I have looked inside,
and the piston is bad. Cylinder walls are scorn.
Low compression, oh yeah. 1 and 2 are loose also. I bought the thing like this, you know
a pig in a poke.
I guess sometimes the bear gets me.
#3 Broken ring, ripped out, and
disintergrated out the exhaust port. A little
banged up there too. That's the piston that's bad. I can do all the work,
and have a machine shop. I am not sure about water in the cylinders.
I just don't want to waste alot of time on it,
and it not be worth it.
And if I buy another motor, not sure about it's problems?
Everything else on it seems fine.
Do you know what kind of time I am looking at
putting in on this?
