I took it out that day and 15 min in it crapped out again same thing no power past half throtle and wide open it would stall, occationaly it would kick in and u could hear the motor skipping. Re: force 85 trigger

It's best to preform a compression test on the engine that will give you a good starting point to work from.
Start at the fuel tank and work your way to the carbs looking for trash or air leaks in the fuel line!
The trigger is relavant to the engine timing and has to do with the firing order of the spark plugs in short! max!

Re: force 85 trigger

Sounds like I have a similar lemon -- I bought the Bayliner with a 1986 85 HP Force in the beginning of May and have been out on the water 5 times and each time have broken down. The original problem with the boat was the trigger binding -- I believe the owner lied to me and didn't have the boat out for a couple of years, even though he said it ran fine last year. Anyway, I bring it back to the marina where he had a water pump put on. They get rid of the bind in the trigger (probably rust) check timing, adjust carbs, check compression (120,120, 120) , change plugs (has good spark), recommend synthetic 2 cycle oil and run it in their test tank fine. I bring it out the day I pick it up and the same thing -- stalls at 1/3 throttle -- it just won't plane. So I put in a fuel pump kit, decarb and fresh gas (again) and go over every wire and hose in the boat and find nothing wrong. Bring it back out and the same thing. Now the boat is back at the marina again and I question why they didn't run it in the water -- they said that running it in the tank is fine and any problems will show there. So, what actually is the problem with these Forces that they just won't plane out? There are a lot of posts that address the same problem, yet no one seems to know what exactly is causing this.

Thanks, Ron

Re: force 85 trigger

I'm headed to the parts store right now for my force -- Im gonna put new fuel line in with a big 'ol fuel filter to see if I can reckon my problems. My BIL said to try pumping out the gas of the inboard tank -- I pumped 2 gallons out through the fuel line, and had a bunch of junk in it -- like BIG PIECES of fuel line... Checked the fuel filter, and there was some dirt, but not much at all.

I suppose the other way to check this would be new fuel line, run into a gas can of new gas. If I still have problems, it's something else instead, right?

Sounds like the typical trash in fuel tank problem with a plugged pickup tube screen. Runs good at lower speeds and at wide open pulls enough vaccum to plug up the pickup tube screen in the gas tank with trash, back to lower speeds, the trash falls away and the engine runs good, go back to wide open and it picks up the trash and starts bogging all over again.
Drove me crazy for two months until my brother firgured out what was going on!
If you have a remote tank you can try that and see if your problem clears up! max!

Re: force 85 trigger

I love this website. Thank you guys. ya there was a ton of stuff in the bowel when we cleaned the carbs. Someone else recomended to put a inline filter in and I will. They are working on it now puting in a trigger now ,which I always thought it was electrical because of the skippin and pierodic power kicking back in and out so im hoping. Im beginging to belive the saying the two best days I had with my boat were the day I bought It and the day I sold it. But when it runs it goes and it is alot of fun.
