I just acquired a new to me boat and the trim doesn't appear to work. When the trim switch is pressed I can hear that it's making a connection to the motor, and I hear it making a connection on the trim motor. Should I buy a new trim motor? I've seen them on eBay for around $200. Please let me know what you recommend. Thank you.

85hp. You check the oil?
What T@T do you have? the 85 used 2 different ones.
The older had a 3 wire the ones from 86/7 on used a 2 wire.
Post a pic or 2 of the one you have??

The pumps available usually the cheapo ones were made in China and were junk. Some were junk right out of the box.

It looks like 2 wire. Green and Blue. How do I check the oil? Do I add it to that screw on the right? Thanks

That knurled knob where the green arrow is pointing is where you add oil. Engine must be in full down position when adding or checking. Use SAE 30 non detergent oil only. Add oil until it comes out....let the excess run out, then screw in the knurled knob securely, but not so tight as to strip it out. It is aluminum.

Thanks, I topped off the oil. Would you recommend replacing the unit in the picture now? I can hear it click on and off but it doesn't even try to raise or lower.

nevermind, got it working. It may have been a combination of low oil and a very low battery. Thanks for the help, going to hopefully take my kids out soon!

Good deal.....those tilt/trim motors usually outlive the outboard motor it is mounted on. Might check/clean the electrical connections...in the switch and the battery. Might be time for a new battery too. A bad battery could cause the clicking you heard....not enough juice to turn it over. A good test of the system is to raise the engine all the way up and see if it stays up or bleeds down.....if it stays up you are golden.
