Hey guys I just got a 1987 bayliner that sat for 4 years. It has a 85 force
anyhow I did try to start it and was told it did run at one time.He also told me he did not winterize it.Well I try to start it and it turns over starts for a sec and a big backfire.I put new gas in her and cleaned the plugs. What do you think and what should I start looking for. Also dont worry I put my 125 force on her so my son and I can go fishing :D

Re: Force 85hp will not run

First go out and buy yourself a manual for the 85 if your interested in doing your own maintenance. A Clymer manual should be fine, that's what I use for my 1989 125hp Force.
Second thing I would do is a compression check on each cylinder. Each cylinder should be within 10 to 15 pounds of each other. And hopefully above 100 on each cylinder.
Other than that I'd check the carbs, pull each carb bowl one at a time and see how each carb looks inside, that will tell you a lot!
Sounds like the backfire could have been where the carbs were too lean, not enough gas in a bowl or bowls or too rich, too much gas in a bowl or bowls causing a flooding condition which you would probably see gas flowing out of one or more carbs!
A float could be sticking in a carb, an inlet needle in a carb could be sticking, a passage way in a carb or carbs could be blocked, jets blocked, etc.

Take your time and study it well, replacing parts may solve your problem after a while but may cost considerably more.
Hope this will be of some help!
Have a great day! max!

Backfire is usually timing. Make sure the plug wires are connected to the correct plugs. If it has never run for you and the previous owner hit something on his last outing that may have sheared the flywheel key. You are going to need a manual as previously mentioned. If carbs are set too lean the plug tips will show it. A compression test and spark test should be done before dumping money into this motor also as previously mentioned.
