I have a 88 HP Force outboard mounted on a 17 ft Bayliner. I want to swap the Force with another motor such as a Mercury. Are there any exact replacements? What should I consider when replacing motors?

Basically the boats designed for that motor. The max rating is 85HP. Since Bayliner only had that motor, boat, and trailer they sold it as a package and the max motor of course is an 85 H.P.

Also note the 15 footer is maxed at 50 and the 19 is 120-125 depending on year. What a coincidence. :D

I honestly believe that any motor up to 115 would be fine with that boat as long as its in good shape, meaning the transom. If you do a USCG on the transom and beam and length it comes out to 120 hp. Length is actually 17.5 Feet. Beam/Width is 6 feet. Transom is 20 inches.

I have also tried the 180 degree wheel test at WOT. you barely get any G's at all. That hull really holds the water and rides extremly nice too. They call it sequential lift, I don't know why as there is not any real planing till 16 mph then it rises smoothly and I cannnot get it to porpose even with the motor raised as high as it will go. I like that feeling. :)

If you have to you could get any 90 Hp motor and put on there. I would discuss this with the insurance agent first however. They might throw a hissy over the extra 5 hp. :D

Re: Force 88 outboard replacement

I am sorry guys, I should have said " I have a 1988 Force outboard mounted on a 17 Ft Bayliner. The motor is 50 HP."

The motor and boat did come as a package as Realgun suggested. I have had real problems with this motor - I can see why no one likes it and no one wants to service it because of the lack of parts.. I have an opportunity to purchase a 40 HP Mercury outboard.

Do you think it will funtion properly on my boat?

Are you sure its 17 ft? Cause the 17 came with an 85 the 15 came with a 50.

The 15' had a hump from gunel to gunel in the middle of the boat!

Re: Force 88 outboard replacement

Not really I remeber them sittin new on the showroom floor and wanting 1 just after I got married. I tend to remeber obscure facts for some reason.

I also answered your question better than anyone else I might add. :) Look in you other post.

I still want to know what boat you have thou. Is is a 1400,1500, or 1700?

Realgun:

I measured the boat. The length is 16 ft 9 in. It has a swim ladder which adds another 3 in equaling 17 feet. It has a 6 ft beam and a 20 in transom.

I have often wondered why it had very little speed. It appears that it had an undersized motor.

Would you concur>
