Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

I got everything back together. My oil tank is empty.I wanted to see if the low level warning horn is working.Turned the key to on and nothing. My book says it should sound.I have never heard the horn before. But I have heard a beep from under the dash when I bumped the dock or bank. What is that beep?THANKS AGAIN

Take the oil level sending unit out of the oil reservoir and clean it off with some carburetor cleaner. Sometimes they get gummed up and don't operate correctly.

That beep may be the oil level warning. It may depend on the oil level in the oil reservoir. My buddy's has a 2001 175XR2 Sport Jet. If he decelerates quickly, it will trigger the oil level alarm for a split second. I would assume that the same would occur if he bumped against the dock or something like that. His set up is a little different than yours though because he has a float attached to a switch inside his oil tank.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

I took my boat out today. It idled great, throttle response was excellent.I think its the best it ran since I bought it.But like always I still had a problem with this piece of $#!/.I ran it at WOT for about 50 yards and the motor shut down, same problem as before.Ill try to explain the best I can.I was at 5000rpm and my tach.dropped and motor shut off.It didnt act like it needed gas but felt like it lost spark.Quickly checked primmer ball and it felt good.I started it back up and idled very poorly.I dont know what a dead cylinder sounds like but the way the motor sounded after I restarted it one could have been dead.Im going to remove the flywheel and see if its broke. Also going to put the old stator and trigger on to see if that makes a difference, cant hurt.ITS NEVER ENDING

Pull another fuel sample to see if there is any water in it.

Drain the carbs into something so you can look at the fuel.

Install a water separating filter, yada, yada, yada.

I have my fuel tank loaded up with seafoam, stabil marine and a little dry gas.I recently had my entire fuel system tore apart, went over it with a fine tooth comb.I will check the carb. bowls for water. But Im really thinking its a spark issue. At this point Ill try anything keep throwing ideas at me.THANKS

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

If it is ignition related, something may be breaking down under a load or after it warms up. Have you tried it again after the motor cooled completely off? If it runs OK after complete cool down, then I would definitely suspect an ignition component failing after heating up. Have you replaced any of the CDM's? Looks like you've replace everything else!

Might try some Freeze-it. If it is heat related, a couple of cans of this stuff may be helpful. Fairly cheap, but not much in each can.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

Yesterday after it shut off I restarted it and it ran like crap. Then I shut it off pulled the blk/ylw wire from the rev limiter to see if that was it,but no change.I didnt try to restart it and fished back to the dock about 45 min.I tried it to put it on the trailer, she fired up,first crank.Today I pulled the flywheel it was ok.The stator and trigger also looked good. When I replaced the old trig. with a new CDI,The old one fit tight in the center, with little or no play. The CDI came with a plastic strip to put in the middle to reduce play, but its still no way near as tight as the original one.Im going to put the old stator and trigger on and see what happens.

I was looking at the CDI site about trouble-shooting problems with the ignition system. I've attached a link to the document below. Look at the last category, trouble-shooting the stator, High speed miss or weak hole shot. Disconnect the regulator and try it. It also says to rotate the stator one hole and try it.

See if you can read this. Format is a bit off, but it's readable. Look at the last section regarding high speed miss. Never heard of repositioning the stator one hole before. I do know that on some of the OEM stators there a sticker with arrows pointing to the direction the stator should be oriented depending on which motor you're putting them on. I just figured that is had to do with the way the wires coming out of the stator had to face. Maybe not? Doesn't make much sense to me though. Disconnecting the regulator makes more sense.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

Im going out in the morning to try the old stator and trigger. If it shuts off at WOT I would like to disconnect the regulator to see if thats it.What wires do I disconnect to do this so I dont damage anything?I think Ive read that if you disconnect the regulator and the motor starts the regulator is bad. Also I looked at that web page very interesting.I can only turn my stator one way,and one hole.By doing that my stator leads are not long enough to connect the wires. The other day I disconnected the rev limiter after it shut off and restarted it with no change,so thats not it.I put the old stator and trigger back on,so if it shuts off its not them.If it does shut off I would like to diconnect the regulator, but dont know which wires to disconnect. With all this I should be able to narrow it down to which part is failing.I think. Thanks pnwboat for all the help.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

Disconnect the two yellow wires from the stator to the regulator. They supply voltage to the regulator. They are connected via two bullet connectors. Wrap a piece of electrical tape around the bare metal bullet connector on the leads coming from the regulator to be safe while testing. Make sure the loose leads won't get caught in anything like the flywheel. It will not damage anything. Also remember, by disconnecting the two yellow leads, you are no longer charging your battery.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

My dad and I were just brainstorming about my boat (SCARY).We were talking about the way it ran the other day before it shut off.I started it,ran through the no wake, about 15 min.at 2000RPM.Then out through the main lake at about 2500-4000RPM for about 10 min.it ran great never shut off.We fished for abut 3 hrs.Started it back up ran through the no wake for 3 min.at 2000RPM,hit open water ran at WOT 5000RPM and it shut off after 50yrds or so_Our question is,what part or parts would break down at WOT after 1 min. of running than part or parts after 30min. of running at a lower RPM.My dad thinks its the rev limiter but I already checked that.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

disconnect the rev limiter and LEAVE IT ON THE DOCK.

Test run the boat, IF, it shuts down, immediately test for spark on each cyl, if weak or no spark then re-install the new ignition module and retest again.

Ignition output rises with RPM and load, WOT puts far more demand on the components than 1/2 or even 3/4 throttle running, if a component is having a heat related failure then it should occur far sooner at WOT, where the same component could concievable run all day at 1/2 throttle.

Leaving the rev limiter out of the system, as it was the only common part between failure of old stator & ign module vs new stator and ign module.

Hopefully a process of elimination will find the culprit without having to buy any more parts.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

Sure sounds like something is breaking down under maximum load. Just a process of elimination. I think you mentioned that you replaced both the regulator and rev. limiter. Go ahead and test those two items. Doesn't hurt to double check.

There is one thing that I don't believe you have mentioned about replacing, and that's the CDM's. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good way to test those with a meter. I can say this though. When it's acting up, fire it back up before it cools down. Let it idle and pull one plug wire off at a time. Idle should drop. Put the wire back on and move on to the next plug. I'll bet you'll find that when you pull one of the wires off of one of the plugs, the idle won't change. That's the bad cylinder. For instance if you pull off 1 and 3 (one at a time) and it has no affect to the idle, but #2 does. Swap the wires ( the 4 wire connector and spark plug wire) from the CDM for #2 and say CDM #3. If the problem now moves to #3, I would suspect that the CDM that is now connected to #3 is bad. If the wires are too short, then you may have to physically swap the CDMs themselves.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

Thanks fellas for all the help and info.I live 45min. from the lake.I was wondering if it is safe to run the motor on the hose at WOT?Will I get enough water to keep the motor cool?I was out yesterday, but there were to many boats to run WOT.The boat idled great ran great, started every time, without problems. That was with the old stator and trigger.

Re: Force 95xr fuel or spark?

It's probably not a good idea to run it WOT without a load on it. Plus most of the time, the hose will not provide adequate volume of water to properly cool the motor and keep from damaging the impeller.
