Just wanted to put out some positives for the ol' Force group. The repair forums are often full of bad news (thats what they are for)...so I just wanted to state my good news and experience.
I'm almost finished my winterization and storage on my '90/90hp Force and the only remaining item to do is to run the motor up on the muffs and shut it down with a good fogging.
I did a post season compression test on it and the readings were positive (120/127/127 dry and 132/136/137 wet). I had done 2 decarbs on it this season and that seemed to keep things up to spec.
The motor is part of the original boat/motor combo purchased in 1990 (Bayliner Capri 18'/Force 90hp) and to my knowledge (3rd owner) has something in the neighbourhood of 450 hrs on it now. This should give a few more years of good service at this rate.
The motor has been very reliable and has never let us down in 3 seasons. We have well over 100 outings on it and I must say its been great value and a good unit. This is probably testament to getting a motor (and boat) with a good history...which apparently is the money shot when buying used, not necessarily buying via the name brand approach.
Next season I will do the fuel pump, the thermostat and install an in-line fuel filter (thanks Frank!) ...all as recommended, to ensure the good times continue. Testament to the excellent advice here in the forum.
Anywhooo, just sharin' some good news and some good history for the Force crowd.

ps: Oh, and here a few pics of the 'ol Combo.

BP1, Great news & I could not of said it any better!

I finished my 4th season w/ my 1984, 85hp on a 16' cuddy capri. I am the second owner & have the original dealer receipt (Scotia Marine) from '84. True, this package has been a charm because (IMO), the first owner took very good care & maintained the rig well. I do the same! I may have some tilt/trim work next year but not to shabby for 25+ years young.

Without a doubt one of the BEST purchases I've ever made and fun too.

Very thankful for all the help from IBoats & a big "shout out" to Frank A!!!

till next season....dk

I agree. I'm on my 3rd season. Bought mine almost 4 years ago for less than a third of what most other rigs were selling for. My old 21 year old 125HP has yet to let me down, although I have to admit that I did rebuild it when I first purchased it. I was able to do so thanks to folks like Frank A. and many others on this site, I hope to enjoy it for many more seasons. I have friends that I hear horror stories from about how much they had to spend on taking their newer outboards in for repair. I just smile and give them my condolences.

Re: Force...Another good season completed!

Its good to hear the good side of these motors. Merc sure did their homework in slagging them when they took them over. I think one of the reasons they sold for so little money in the late 80's and early 90's is that their design was, by comparison, dated. However for the same reason the design costs had been absorbed long ago and it was easy and cheap to keep building this older design.
I paid $3k for the entire package as shown in the pics and its been great value. I've worked to keep it in the condition I received it in and I would have been hard pressed to get the kind of mileage for that price out of any other package...at least around these parts up here in the Pacific Northwest.
Regardless, I know a lot of guys that paid 3-4 times the money of my entire boat/motor/trailer package for their motor alone:eek:
I can't remember who it was in the forum who said that the great thing about the Force engines is that you can pick them up for about the same price as a lawnmower...which for an outboard motor and the exorbinant costs for them, is a great deal!!:)
I picked up a spare '91/90hp a couple of years ago as a spare for $200 (compression all 135-140psi dry) and I keep it as a 'bolt-in/bolt-on' spare.
All good, lets (defiantly) keep 'em going!:D

Good to hear of your trouble free season BIG1,as there are some people that are constant whiners on here that must not like force [or chrysler] motors as much as you and I[and countless others]. Why a person would get on a specific forum and run that forums objective down is a mystery to me[other than the fact that they have that right], but to each their own. My two cents worth , and I wish you many more trouble free seasons. MOPARMAN ROLL TIDE
