Was it Sheryl Crow who sang "That Don't Impress Me Much"?

Been there, Done that, Bought the tee-shirt, Wore it, Washed it, Wore it out, Threw it out! LOL

Seroiusly man-- as you get older the noise is not so pleasant and who really wants that racket on a long cruise? 2 cycles are noisy enough! Besides, except for sanctioned racing, cut-outs are illegal (at least in my state)

I just keep those holes in my lower unit because I haven't gotten around to filling them with flathead screws and JB Weld.

Well, for reasons stated below I don't recommend it but, if you really want to drill the lower unit: I started my holes just aft of the vertical section of the lower unit. You must not go too far forward because there is the oil chamber there and the water pump sits on top. Best would be to remove the lower unit so you can see where to drill. These holes go through the lower unit into the exhaust chamber just above the snout. The wall thickness is only about 1/8 to 3/16 inch so it is an easy drill.

Since the anti-ventilation plate should be riding on or near the surface of the water, about one inch up from the plate is a good location. You can drill as many as will fit towards the rear, at least five, possibly six. I conservatively elected to use four on each side.

I used a piece of drilled angle to guide me and evenly space the holes. Please make and use a template of some sort--a crooked line and unevenly spaced holes makes a messy-looking amateur job.

I drilled 3/8 of an inch diameter then countersunk the outside---planning ahead to the day when I would want to bolt them closed with flathead stainless screws. Of course you can drill larger, or you can go two rows high. Essentially though there will be a point where the noise level will not increase and you will be weakening the lower unit casting.

The engine is significantly noisier and no faster. SO---If you like the noise, do it. If you want to go faster, forget it.

Re: force exhaust sound.

The reason the exhaust goes out under water is to make it quiet.
Look around for more exhaust pics.
There was a pic of a guy with straight pipes out of the head. That way you can get all the noise you want.

Re: force exhaust sound.

friends
can use a lower unit front a 85hp 1987 that is a single drive shaft piece
by 120hp which is 2 pieces drive shaft ,

This is to know
and not get rid of it
and drill this one first
also a question I put a prop without using thru gouache and I think it went over tighten
because i see a little of oil
coming from the propeller
believe that damage something

Picture 298.jpgTach and stuff 013.jpg
That black thing on the end of the prop shaft is for the older props.
The blue lowers didn't use that.
If you use an older prop it's needed.

(I put a prop without using thru gouache and I think it went over tighten. )????
You mean the thrust washer?Picture 002.jpg

If it's leaking?? Then show pics of the damage.
Do a pressure test??

In your photos, the first lower unit off a 120 is a dual exhaust lower. It must use a thru-hub exhaust propeller. The second lower off the 85 is a single exhaust unit and you can use almost any Force prop.

The black thing is called a "Flare Washer" and it was used on Chrysler and White Force engines with the extended prop shaft for a tailcone ( painted red in the second and third photo). It has several functions. It spaces the propeller so it does not slide forward and backward on the shaft and it is supposed to help prevent ventilation and cavitation. You must NOT use it on the dual exhaust lower unit as it will block the thru-hub exhausting. It can be replaced with a special spacer made by the manufacturer OR one or two large stainless or bronze plain washers with a hole large enough to fit over the splines of the prop shaft (7/8 inch)

You must also check the gear ratio on both those lower units. It is surely different. The dual exhaust uses Mercury Gears and is about 1.85 to 1 while the one off the 85 could be about 1.76 to 1 or 2 to 1. Switching lowers could require you to change prop pitch to compensate for gear ratio in order to keep engione RPM correct. The easy way to check is to put a prop on the shaft and put the lower unit is gear. spin the shaft until it starts to move the prop. Mark the position of the prop and spin the shaft twice. If the prop spins only once it is 2 to 1.

Re: force exhaust sound.

yes frank
I did not put the thrus hub washer in the dual exhaust lower unit
because i was trying to put the single exhaust propeller
but is a bit shorter
and I think tightening too much
maybe pull the prop shaft
is complicated change the oil seal
in the dual exhaust prop.

Re: force exhaust sound.

disappointed
drill the lower unit
but i drill the exhaust part that goes for the propeller (dual exhaust) and
not did sound difference.
sound was not that I expected to hear
the lower unit now have 4 holes unnecessary LOL.
I think it's better to have everything stock..

thank
