I have a 1985 Nordic Crestliner openbow with the MCM 120 stern drive in it. Earlier this week, i tried starting the boat the same as I always do, to find it wouldn't start. I did some poking around and I took the neutral safety switch off the back of the throttle control. While that was off, I took the two wires off of it and reconnected them. At that point, I held the button in, and the boat started up. So, I reassembled things to see if it would still work.
My throttle control is supposed to work by pulling the entire lever out (away) from the side of the boat, then I can roll it forward to increase the throttle while still in neutral. This no longer works. Even if I loosen the screw that holds it on and roll it forward, it stays in gear. Oddly enough, the engine STARTS while in gear now too. [I think that may be because I connected the wires back up backwards]. However, I don't think crossing those wires is going to make the neutral not work any longer.
I'll swap the wires again tomorrow and see how things work, but I don't think that's causing my neutral issue, just the issue where my boat starts when in gear instead of in neutral. Once that's fixed.
I did not loosen the shifting cables at all.
Any thoughts on what can be wrong with the force pull neutral problem?
No - there is no name on the throttle controls that I have found. The middle of the base of the handle says pull neutral, and that is how the boat has functioned for years. It has a trigger that is supposed to be required to put the boat in gear. YES -- I double checked that that the other side of that lever still engages in the splined rotation assembly. [IE, that lever still appears to work properly].
