I have a single tilt trim ram system that is off a 40 hp Force.

1. Is this cylinder the same as any Mercury? The Force part number is F749381F. Is there a rebuild kit for it? If not are all the o rings and seals standard sizes?

2. Is the pump itself the same as any of the Mercury? Is it a good or crappy pump?

3. Is ATF the preferred fluid for this system?

4. Does this SINGLE ram function as both a trim and a tilt? Can it be trimmed at high speed or does it not have the "power" for that?

Thanks!

it's a good pump. take it apart, was it out, and blown clean. then just reassemble. replace the oring that gets sandwiched between halves and the three on bottom. you can replace the small plastic ball on bottom with 1/8" steel ball if absolutely needed. It would be better to use plastic (i think its acetal ... maybe delrin? i have hard time remembering names of all the different plastics). thats it. you're done. now you need to rebuild that ram.

it is a great pump. probably the most rugged, dependable, and trouble free pump mercury ever had. but sensitive to debris. When your ram starts breaking down it puts out debris and the debris cause pump failures. Whenever I see one of these pumps not working I automatically assume the ram is going bad.

you can not interchange any parts with other years becuase the oil rubes won't line up on bottom of manifold.

Engine model 408F92C serial 015478.

Also see pic below. When I took apart I did not find a third o ring on the manifold nor a third ball bearing. There also doesn't seem to be a recess for a third o ring either. I sure don't think I lost them and it did go up and down before I took apart.

I need to get a proper spanner wrench to take ram apart but any list of parts such as o rings and seals would be appreciated, thanks.

Also, are there rubber o rings associated with what I think are check valves or leave well enough alone?

you don't need to replace the orings or needle seats in check valves. however, you do need to open them up and flush out. you need to take everything 100% down and flush it out. debris is your enemy.

ok, so it looks like your pump only has two orings. the "empty hole" usually has a spring and a plastic ball bearing. there is a pin hole on bottom of gearcase and it is your over-pressure bypass. sometimes the spring has a brass cup to keep the ball bearing centered.
