Does anyone know which is the correct feed wire from the stator to connect to my new 12 pole tachometer. The Engine is a 120hp with Force control box (1996). Not sure which one to splice into, or which side of the control box to pick up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tach goes to either side of the stator to ground. If you look on the engine there is normally a wire already included in the harness for the tach.

Re: Force Tacho Information

Thanks, The only spare wire that comes from the Stator area and terminates near the instruments is Grey, and originates from the Voltage regulator, could this be the key?

All the wires from the stator either go straight to the Control Box or the voltage regulator, the only spare is this grey. Any thoughts?

Re: Force Tacho Information

yes-grey, the regulator/rectifier converts the ac stator voltage, to dc voltage, which is then fed to the tach.

So, if you are motoring along some day, and your tach quits, it is a pretty good indicator that something may be wrong with your rectifier and charging circuit.

Wrong. The tach connects to the ac side of the rectifier and counts the pulses. The gray wire is the tach wire on my 50 and 85HP Force.

If the tach quits either the stator failed or rectifier failed shorted. If the rectifier fails open, the tach will still work.

So "Grey or not to Grey, that is the question".

If it isn't the DC side, which is it? The only loose wire is the grey so my money is on this one.

Any further comments will be greatly accepted

The grey wire. The grey wire should be connected to the stator (AC) side of the rectifier. I believe the stator wires are yellow, but I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me.

Re: Force Tacho Information

The two wires that lead from the stator to the regulator / rectifier are yellow, the only other two wires that connect to the Reg / rect are red + and grey. It's this grey that terminates near the instrument cluster. All the other wires that come from the stator go to the control box.

I think the grey is the way to go.

thanks for the info.

Re: Force Tacho Information

Bob
on a 96 force 120 the gray lead is tach send. on the tach you will see something like ign, grnd and send
the gray lead is an ac voltage pickeked off the stator coils.
if you have quicksilver side mount controls you should have a pig tail. if you have a dash mounted ign switch the gray wire will be in the dash harness. purple is 12v positive with key on.

Re: Force Tacho Information

Sorry LI CHuck, me be all froze up in the brain about the ac/dc feed.

But it is still the grey wire.

And when my reg/rectifier went, the tach stopped working.

And I didn't say your tach WILL stop working if the rectifier goes bad. I said, if you are motoring along some day, and your tach quits, it is a pretty good indicator that something MAY be wrong with your rectifier and charging circuit.

This as a heads up to someone that may notice the tach has stopped working, that they should check it out before continuing on to a location where they could be stranded.

Thanks Guys, the info has been put into practice, and the boat's now got a new Tacho.

Living here in Ireland we sometimes have problems in getting the right info, but hey not this time.

Thanks again for everyones help....

Roscoe,

I was siting at work annoyed with some of the nonsense. No insult intended. I just wanted to clarify that the tach is a good indicator but just because the tach works doesn't mean the charging system is OK.

After this weekend we're catching up with you on being "froze up". Lot's of snow with lots of warning. The networks make it sound like a disaster, but it wasn't.

No offense or insult taken.
I should have been more clear in my original post.

Make tach you bought has the correct # of poles. Some models run on the 20 pole which are not easy to find if you have the wrong tach you will fry it.

Re: Force Tacho Information

Yes and Faria is not making the 20 pole parts anymore. That makes me mad cause my motor needs a tach to go with the new interior/exterior. Only thing left was a bare hull!

Teleflex makes a tachometer for older Force outboards.
