Force thermostat problem

Have a '98 Force 90 HP. Last time I had it in the water, the pee hole had no water coming out, so the other day I took the thermostat housing off to find out why. We have some kind of bee around here that loves to nest in anything small and cylindrical so that was the problem w/ the pee hole. Made sure thermostat was installed correctly and buttoned it up.
Yesterday the wife and I took the toon out for some late evening fishing. Didn't get a 100 yds from the dock and heat alarm sounded . Back to dock, get tools and remove thermostat, problem fixed. Will get a new thermostat tomorrow and install it. Now my question is: I bought this about a yr ago and whenever I'd let it idle in gear for over 10 min the heat alarm would sound, speed up and it would shut off. Could the thermostat going bad cause this?
TIA,
Mike

I would change the water pump impeller too if you haven't already done so.

Sound to me like it might be time to change your impeller. It's wearing out and at ideal its not pumping enough water to cool the engine.

+2 on the impeller.

As for the bee. If you live on the east coast, the insect is called a mud dauber wasp. It can build a nest in 15 minutes. At a airport in Virginia, it build a nest in a airliner pitot tube and caused the aircraft to abort takeoff and run off the runway. Keep an eye out for those little buggers.
