Just installed used Tilt & Trim on 85HP Force.
Tried to "Bench Test" prior to permanet wiring etc. Unfortuanately I do not have my Shop Manual yet. (on order for over three weeks from Amazon)
Tried puting +12V on Green and than on Blue - no action. Next, I checked res. between motor case and each wire - nothing. There is res. between two wires (not open) and seems to be a good grownd to motor
Help, what am I missing or do I have a Bad PUMP.

Any help would be appreciated

John

Re: Force Tilt & Trim Testing

First, note that both up/down should be run thru an individual solenoid. A cheapo-Ford generic starter or lawnmower starter solenoid will werk on this. It's just that the current levels required to operate the trim motor would cook any switch you connect it directly to...But you probably already knew this (just makin sure).

Black to frame ground (you can ground it to the motor frame AND to the neg of the battery for testing.

Blue= "DOWN" positive

Green= "UP" positive
It will take a set of jumper cables for bench-testing,or other very heavy duty wire.
Watch out for sparks as they can cause the battery to explode due to igniting hydrogen gasses allways present around an unsealed battery.
So try to connect the battery leads fisrst, and keep it as far from the trim motr as possable while testing.
I hope it's a good motor. If not, you can have the motor rebuilt at any auto starter/alternator shop.

Re: Force Tilt & Trim Testing

Hi 12footer, thanks for the reply. How does the pump motor normally get ground? Do, I need to scape some paint off someware or run a seperate wire to the pump. I have continuity between the BAT. Neg and the Pump mounting Bolts and as I mentioned continuity between the Blue and Green.(which I believe show they are not "Open')

Thanks again - John

Re: Force Tilt & Trim Testing

if its simuliar to my force you have two relays when the relays are not energized and working properly it automaticly sends ground out to both wires going to the motor and then when you hit the switch you will energize one relay wich will send positive voltage out to one wire depending on whether you are going up or down, basicly the polarities are reversed for the up and down positions and the motor will run two directions.
hope this helps.

Re: Force Tilt & Trim Testing

you guys are confusing two different trim motors...2 wire [green/blue] and 3 wire [breen/blue/black]...3 wire uses solenoids, 2 wire uses relays to reverse polarity of the wires...yes, on 2 wire positive to the color you want the pump to run...blue sky up, green grass down...

Re: Force Tilt & Trim Testing

Thanks to everybody, My Trim seems to be working fine. Once, I found out that these motors are REVERSE Polarity and NOT Motor case grounded, I simply hooked up Blue to +12v and Green to -12v for UP and vise-versa for down. When I get my Relays, I'll be in business

Thanks again

John
