Re: Force Transom Mount problems...

OK I have found a 1990 90 HP force motor with a blown powerhead. The motor comes equipped with a good LU and the tilt/trim is in tack, as where mine doesnt work to good (tilt/trim). This find is only $100. My question is will the transom mount from that motor fit on my motor? This 90 HP came off of the same boat as mine so everything will match, holes transom mount opening and so on. I just need to know if it will be interchangeable with mine? hmmm the LU should just be a swap to if needed down the road, as well as coils and such correct? Thanks for all the help I am getting here in this thread. One way or another I will be on the lake for the 4th!!!

Thats a great deal Cordell....take it. Its worth it for the peace of mind on all the spare parts, particularly the lower unit, let alone spare coils, power pack, starter, stator, prop?, etc;)
As for interchangeability I think Roscoe responded in your other post that the mount bracket is identical from the 125 back down to the 90hp...or maybe all (3) cylinder motors? I'm not the guy to ask tho'...but I would bet on it fitting yours.
Keep us posted.

Re: Force Transom Mount problems...

I also just found another guy who has the mount I can pick up for next to nothing...I am thinking that will be what I will do, I have to put the motor off for 2 weeks or so. Money is tight after buying the new to me hull. Our overtimed at work has been taken away since the gas price rise, really sucks!!!
Either way I go Thursday I will launch at the local lake here, Lodi Lake. Pics will be posted of whichever solution I use. I have search many threads and wouldn't mind adding my own jack plate type mount. I just do not have the steering to do so.:(

Re: Force Transom Mount problems...

Well I started the process of modifying my mount today. I went with the removal of about a 1/8 inch of the mount on the screw clamp side. This will allow me the 3 inches I need to sit the motor on my transom. I took the grinder with a sanding wheel on it and cleaned it up a bit. I am sure I have compromised the integrity of the mount a bit but I am thinking by it being such a tight fit I should be OK. I also sealed the top holes with some reisen and saw dust filler mixed in, this went pretty well considering I have never done this before. I will get some pics up tomorrow before I mount, well after I mount. Then I will show you all the final outcome. I am still yet to inset some sort of steel washers. I need to find these with NO holes for bolts, shouldn't be to hard. my local hardware store has everything. Hope tomorrow goes as smooth as today!:)

Re: Force Transom Mount problems...OMG!!!!

OMG!!! What a waste of a day!!!:eek: I had to grind away about 3/16 off the screw side of the mount. This took away from the structure of the mount as when I tried to tighten my screws the mount cracked in the top screw side corner!!:mad::mad: I spent a lot of time modifying this dang thing to have it end that way...lol I ended up driving 1 hour to a guy who has a broke down 90 hp with no coils, trim, LU, ect. However he did have the correct mount. I got it for $30. Yeah $30 thats all I need to complete this job from the gate! I am kicking myself as to why I didn't just go there first thing in the morning  instead of being stubborn and trying to defy the integrity of Force, if they have any..lol J/K Anyway I will post a pic of the split I knew it would happen as soon as I turn the wrench the first time.hehe As for the holes I drill for the flush washers I will reglass before I mount my motor...

Re: Force Transom Mount problems...

Well today was smooth as glass! I swapped transom mounts and lowered my motor right onto the boat. Like clock work I bolted, wired and hit the local lake...I have to say I am happy with the comfort of this boat as my tri hull was smaller and when in the Delta here I was a bit worried as some swells are 4 to 5 feet. We took on NO water from leaks OR just riding. The design kept water flying away from us. The big windows down the side helped too. I did trade about 9 mph of speed for this comfort though, not to thrilled with that. My coast guard sticker says 90 HP is max though I believe 120 would be fine. iboats has my boat listed at 120 HP so maybe it was re-rated after they were already on the water. Either way I plan to repower next year with a bigger HP motor. I still am kicking myself for not spending the $30 for this mount in the beginning, I thought by modifying I would save the 2 hour round trip...The mod took about 3 hours itself! lol Stubbornness!!!

Re: Force Transom Mount problems...

Well, Cordell, I had some problems accessing this thread but I did want to try to convince you NOT to grind the engine mount clamps before you did it. I was really uncomfortable with that--of course, now you know why. Even though the same clamps are used for 85-125 engines, you are taking away any safety factor.

These clamps are I beam cross section forgings. The strength of an I beam is dependent not only upon the thickness of the web, but also upon the thickness of the flanges. Any grinding on the flange increases stress and weakens it. In addition, if you do not maintain the large radius at the top of the opening, there will be a large increase in stress there. You are lucky it broke in the driveway.

Any grinding on these parts is objectionable and if I bought an engine with clamps reworked, I would IMMEDIATELY replace them. One thing that really ruins my day is to have an engine hanging off the transom on the electrical, fuel and control cables.

Although these clamps are VERY strong because they are forgings, I have seen stock ones torn apart when an ocean running boat went into the air and came down with the engine turned to the side and at full throttle. It overloaded one clamp and tore it like paper.

By the way: If you have not already installed the replacement clamps, before you do, check the holes in the yoke. The through bolt is only 1/2 diameter and the holes in the yoke (which are plain aluminum) tend to wear from constant use of trim/tilt. If worn objectionally, there is enough meat in the yoke that they can be bushed with 1/2 i.d. sintered bronze bushings--if greased properly, they will last longer than the engine.
