I have a 90 force 120 with many problems. At idle it has a constict miss. Run,Run,Run,Miss,Run,Run,Run,Miss. Also when you take off out of the hole it will sputter, miss and almost fall on its face and then all of a sudden it will just take off with no miss. Also it looks like steam is coming out of the peehole on rear of the motor. I have going to check the timing but could only find on make on the flywheel could you please tell me what this mark is. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Re: Force with Many Problems

Sounds like the carbs need some work, one or more cylinders are running lean. This is very bad for your motor.

Time to buy a repair manual and get a couple or carb rebuild kits from either a Merc dealer or NAPA auto parts store. Clean them out real good and make sure you reassemble them correctly.

DO NOT mix any of the parts from one carb to the next. Keep them all separate.

Take a couple pictures of the carb linkage before you start.

I wouldn't mess with the timing till you get the miss/stutter taken care of. Heck, I wouldn't mess with the timing at all. It is not something that gets out of adjustment on an outboard.

Watch for a sticky choke. Mine would die if I did not goose it hard. Cleaned the choke and WOW. It will give you whiplash out of the hole. It is a 1990, 120 L-Drive Bayliner. Love that boat, now.
