Ford 302 Engine Fuel Componets - Auto Emission Analyzer Tank

I have an old 24 ft cabin crusier with a 302 Ford Engine. Recently removed the engine and rebuilt it. While it's out of the boat, I am cleaning, and learning about the boat. On the engine, where the fuel line connects, there is a solenoid, (I think that's what it is) that has wired coming out and a tube with a hose connector on it. I followed the hose, and it goes all the way to the middle of the boat, where it connects to a tee, the tee is connected to a gas cylinder? Looks like a propane tank, then goes from there up under the control panel near the Tach. The gas cylinder says it is Auto Emission Analyzer Gas. Why would this be tucked way up under the cabin? Does anyone know why this would be on my boat?

That is down right WIERD!

The only thing I can think of is that someone engineered an odd and dangerous way to give the engine a shot of ether to help starting.

Maybe propane injection? Maybe a poor mans Nitrous system?

It certainly doesn't belong there.

Wierd!

Yeah. Wow!! The canister is as it says, for calibrating emission test equipment, so this is clearly cobbled together.

Howdy,

Scotty (and other companies) make calibration gases for auto emission testing equipment. If you're testing for CO, CO2, NO2 etc....in automotive exhaust, you have to calibrate the "tester" (or check calibration) with a known and acurrate concentration whatever gas you're trying to detect.

Someone who had access to those containers evidently used it for something else.

Maybe a poor mans Nitrous system?
Probably............

I am more interested in where the hose goes (after the solenoid)............to the carburetor?

Yeah, Very Strange indeed.

I assumed that maybe someone had an engine analyzer on board, I understand the need for a known gas for calibration. I just couldn't imagine a use on a boat, no smog or anything like that,

I will be removing the control panel this weekend, time permitting, to see where the hose is connected under the dash, just for my own amusement : )

I am going through the wiring on this boat, before I install the rebuilt engine.

Has been quite the project. My first boat, so I have been learning as I go.
Everyone keeps telling me to go buy a boat in running condition, but, hey, I am enjoying this one : )

Removing the outdrive and engine was a challenge. The bellows were ripped and saltwater fused the main shaft into the flywheel plate. Of course, I spent a few weeks to get everything apart, just to get the engine out. Learned a lot though.

I know have rebuilt the engine, first for that as well, bought all new exhaust and risers, new marine carb, yadda yadda yadda.

As I said,I am going throgh the boat now, cleaning it up and making repairs before I put the engine back in.

I'll post some pictures soon, as I make some progress....

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will be removing this make shift tank and hoses.....

Yeah. It's not likely that you would need the calibration gases once the analyzer was calibrated............ I'll bet the tank was used as a receptacle for either nitrous oxide or other gas.

It just happened to me to have the same motor sitting around. So if you ever need any help with original setup just ask.

Thanks Onega!

I sometimes walk outside and think, "what was I thinking" : )
Then I open up the shop and see the fresh motor sitting there, and everything is ok again : )

I am waiting on a rebuild kit for the Sherwood Water pump, and I'll be putting the thermostat and cover on.
Rebuilt Carb just arrived also, so I may be starting the here pretty soon : )

I'll post some pictures next weekend, so you all can see how really crazy I am : )

This motor will give you many years of service if done right. Mine is '77 all original just kept running and running until got tired finally.
Boat is gone but I'm going to keep this motor for a while, you never know...351 would be better for your boat though.

Re: Ford 302 Engine Fuel Componets - Auto Emission Analyzer Tank

Yes it would : )
Then I would have to change out the outdrive wouldn't I? It had a Penta 270 on it, but I found a Penta 280 in prestine shape, soI will be changing out the bell housing and installing it. The gear ratio matches my motor from what I have been told. The 270 had salt water damage from the ripped bellows. I'll try and post some photos of the boat. I took the rest of the floor boards out today so I could work on the wiring harness, and the side panels. I'll replace them with new plywood, and a good coat of expoy paint.

That tank could not be filled with liquid Nitrous Oxide not rated for anywhere near the 1200 psi working presher . Nitrous is a liquid in the tank, phase changes to a gas state when released.

Im betting it was setup as a vacuum storage canister, Storing up engine vacuum for some reason.

I'd recommend starting a new thread in VP section regarding your drive to get more attention from Volvo folks. I did have Mercruiser on that boat.
