Guys,

its a newly rebuilt motor @Jakem covered in his resto thread

pinging is either timing too far advanced or running lean.

Hence, check the timing and check the fuel filter contents.
(y)OP did not mention this was a fresh motor in the original post in this thread hence my suggestions.

in which case 100% a timing issue ,
FWIW, i neglected to tighten the distributor to spec after correcting the timing on my 4.3 and the timing moved slightly after the first days outing. engine pinged when the secondary's cracked open .it had only moved 2 degree.

Ok .I am going to change the fuel line shutoff as it looks old and also filters. I adjusted carb as per my book wich said 1 1/4 out and then adjust from there. Maybe I should go 2 out and start from there. Any suggestions

that is only the idle circuit.

I would start by changing the fuel filter and pour the contents into a clear container. you may have water in your fuel which would cause you to run lean

That's from water/fuel separator. Doesn't look very good to me

Yeah that's not good. Unfortunately looks like you have rust or other contamination in the fuel tank, you need to empty tank clean it out clean the fuel lines etc and then rebuild the carb.

Had this issue with my old GTO, when I actually started driving it rust was getting kicked up from old fuel tank left a red sediment layer in carb fuel bowl. After replacing fuel tank cleaning lines no more issue ...

How long had that container been sitting there before you snapped the pic? Water in the fuel will look like that before it settles out...

I can't tell what that bottom layer is, but that's the problem. What it is will determine next steps. Either way the gas is probably useable in some capacity. I'd see what's in your carb bowl.
