Alight here it is. Took boat out today and it started nice and kept running great so choke adjustment worked. I have full fuel pressure at wot..how ever when I went to take off for the first time after warm up it was really sluggish. I set timing back to 10 dtdc. Took off better but still somewhat sluggish...third attempt to take off...no problem and for the rest of day all good...perhaps connection issue somewere

So no more pinging? You had verified fuel contamination and may have to clean out the carb would be my first thought (unless you did clean it already)

other thought is to watch with a timing light see if things advance or if there is a miss.

On my Edlebrock I had a little bit of play in the accelerator pump linkage that was causing a huge delay and bog when towing a skiier, didnt see it until I put a AFR meter on it and it was going way lean for a bit then would recover way rich. I was fattening up jets basically two wrongs trying to make a right... I had to bend the accelerator pump rod a touch longer so it had no slack when i hit the gas

Still a slight ping at wot...if I back off about a 1/4 inch it stops. I don't run full blast anyways

I couldn't take off at all at 8
the difference between 8 and 10 intital timing wont be that significant, would suspect that is a red herring and something else is going on. Given what you saw in the fuel tank would think poping top on carb would be in the nest step

What octane fuel are you using? While some manufacturers say 87 is ok, I have never run less that 89 in my 4.3 4bbl, and at our gas docks all they sell is 93. Pinging & detonation are things to be avoided at all costs in marine inboards.
OMC put a sticker in the flame arrestor stating that 89 was the min octane ti be used and if you used lower octane th em timing had to be retarded from 6* BTDC to 1* BTDC.

I believe it's 87...from what I recall engine builder told me that was ok but I will up the octane and go from there

I installed the replacement carb and the choke and overall movement is way better then the other. It's all free and the other seemed it wasn't so here's hoping

I suspect the same stuff that was in your fuel tank got into the old carb.

with inflation the value of a well used 3.7 has never been higher …
