Re: Ford 302 starter question

Um, what year pinto starter do you think would work?

J/k The deal is i bought this boat for $250 and would like to dump as little money as possible into it to get it running to see IF i can get it running. If i get it running i will not mind putting a little more into it to make it safe. But right now money is tight and i dont want to spend $120 when $35 will do to help me trouble shoot.

BTW i did find some "Marine" starters on Ebay for like $67 shipped. You think one of those is really a Marine one, seems cheap.

Re: Ford 302 starter question

I took apart a marine 302 starter and an auto 302 starter, both 1970's vintage, the only difference I could see was the marine starter had different brush holders and the nose piece had drain holes in it. I swaped in the marine brush guards and nosepiece and used it for a while until I saved up for one those high torque mini starter marine approved.
You could use whatever v8 ford starter will bolt up to troubleshoot get compression readings whatever, you just cant put the boat on any public lake.
Well I shouldn't say can't, people do it, and once in a while you hear about a boat fire or explosion it does happen.

The marine parts are cheap insurance. If you life aint worth the hundred bucks or so for the marine one then go for it. Gas fumes do and will settle in your bilge, the blower helps but it doesn't take much gas fume to go boom. And if it does go boom with auto parts in it, don't bother calling your insurance agent for a claim against the boat or anything around it because they won't cover stuff like this under those conditions. Just sayin.

I dont plan on running the boat with auto parts. But i dont want to start spending alot of money to try to get the thing running only to find out the motor is toast.
I have heard enough here to convince me that using the boat with auto parts is not a good idea, but the will have to be ok for now till i know its worth dumping some cash in.

Tom, I've been following your thread, since U are from my neighborhood.
I would go down to Pull a Part in Lakewood, buy a $8 starter, remove the dog house to ventilate, just to see if U can get the damn thing to turn over,,,

Be advised it will blow up just as easily on land with an automotive starter, alternator, fuel pump, or carb as it will on the water.

Ventile ventilate ventilate.
