Re: Ford 6.0 diesel that bad?

I have a 1995 7.3 with 160,000. Had to replace glow plugs and alternator; otherwise, no problem. I did have an occasional miss in California but switching to Shell or BP diesel took care of the problem. These brands have a higher centane rating for the diesel. In Wisconsin all diesel fuels work fine for me. These engines are supposed to start at -20 without block warmer.

Re: Ford 6.0 diesel that bad?

I'm looking a two 2003 F250 diesels for my next tow rig. One is a 2003 XLT super cab with the 7.3l and 186,00 on the clock. The other is a 2003 Lariat crewcab with the 6.0l and 145,000 on the clock. I know the 7.3 has been the king of the hill, but having the crew cab would make life easier for the family. Has the 6.0 had that many problems? Would it be that much worse on fuel than the 7.3? Price is reasonably close on both rigs, so it's pretty much a case of the better choice.

ford pretty much cured their injector problems after 2004...i have a 2006 where i've modded the girl up, removed the converter and airbox, took out the EFR valve and EGR cooler(the root of all 6.0 head bolt problems) and added an SCT programmer with custom tunes from Innovative tunes...it gave me about 5 miles more per gallon, better towing temps and power to pull my 32 ft 5th wheel up a 5% grade for over a mile without losing speed.(yes, that kind of power)...by undoing fords mistake, the 6.o can be a very powerful and dependable powerhouse...i've always traded my trucks in every 3 yrs, but i'm keeping this one because it's better than anything they put on the lots.

Cavitation wear is a significant known issue.

It can be avoided (see Fleetwin), but it can't be ignored.

i added a good coolant filter also, the casting sand from these motors eat up water pumps....no problems since.

Re: Ford 6.0 diesel that bad?

I am a ford diesel tech and I own an 06 F-250 6.0 of my own.

The 6.0 is not terrible in my opinion, after the introduction of the 6.4 it is definitely the lesser of 2 evils. If you can find someone who really knows how to work on them then you'll be fine. Any diesel costs money to maintain, much more so than a gas engine that's for sure. I wouldn't give up my 6.0 for anything though.

Any questions ask away. I run an EGR delete on my truck but 03s don't experience cooler failures like the 2004.25+

B20 isn't going to kill your 6.0 but it is going to plug your fuel filters right away, it will clean all of the crap out of the fuel system and nicely deposit it in the filter media. Actually the lubricity of biodiesel is unmatched, you'll likely notice your injectors get quieter with bio in the tank.

i add 1 oz of 2 cyl outboard oil(ashless) for each gallon of fuel, that add the lubricity that the injectors need.

I agree. TCW-3 is an excellent diesel fuel lubricant. I run stanadyne lubricity formula in my truck
