just wondering if anyone has towed with a ford explorer sport trac? and what the general consensus was when towing. I just got a 01 sport trac, after totaling my durango. I'll be pulling a 18 ft. i/o with it.

depends on what the tow rating is on the vehicle, and trailer weight loaded. you don't give us and specs on the vehicle.

My daughter has one and she pulls a 18' Bayliner with outboard with no problem.

it's a 4.0 L v6, #5040 tow rating. the trailer with the boat probably weighs around 2500-3000 lbs loaded. I was just wondering if people liked towing with it. and if theres any issues that it has like the tranny or something. pretty much just what they think of it while towing.

Re: ford explorer sport trac

My brother in law in Connecticut has one and tows a very heavy tandem axle Wells Cargo trailer. He has towed the thing with three fully dressed Harley Davidsons in them to Florida and back to Ct. He has also made a few trip to upstae Ny with the same rig and it tows quite fine. He's an ex truck driver so he's used to towing but as a passenger in the rig it seems to hold it's own in what must be all of 4500#. He has electric brakes and said he gets 8mpg while towing and 22 on the highway without the trailer. He got the smaller V-8, I think a 4.7 liter maybe. He also got a tall geared rear end for highway miles.

If you have an automatic, a tranny cooler is a must unless you like replacing clutch packs. The Explorer has a soft suspension...make sure your tongue weight is correct. The V-6 will do OK with that weight, not great...but OK. My wife has the V-6 in her's and it towed a 2500# Wellcraft pretty good when we had it.

I tow a tad over 5K with my 04 ranger with the 4.0L You wont have any problems. The SOHC's are great motors and I havent had any problems with the tranny eather. Look for a cooler already on your sport trac. I know the rangers came with them already.

Re: ford explorer sport trac

I used to tow with a 2000 Explorer (same running gear as your sport trac. I towed a 18' I/O and a current boat is 20' I/O. Towed the 18' OK, towed the 20' , no very good and I upgraded the truck. I added air bags to the rear suspension and upgraded the shocks. Both helped the towing performance lots. I woulds definitely add a good transmission cooler to the truck, even if you have a factory one (if you have towing package you have a second one in front of rad.). The 5R55E transmission is not know for it toughness. Not sure how much your setup weighs or the law in your area (goes by state) but I would think about adding trailer brakes to your setup if you do not already have them. Some friends make fun of my love of trailer brakes. (I have SS discs and all 4 wheels of new boat, and I LOVE them). Easy example why is the other week I was coming back across the state and a guy pulled out in front of me on a small 2 lane 55MPH road and the every wheel on the trailer locked up and ABS on the truck kept me straight and he accelerated outta the way of me about to give him a 10K pound turbo boast. I figure that situation alone saved me my insurance deductible right there, plus the risk of injury/hassle etc. Bottom line you can never have a vehicle that stops too fast, especially while towing. You are under the max rated value which is key. As FYI, if you exceed that and get an accident you are uninsuranced, lots of people do not realize the risk they take by exceeding the tow rating. Speaking of ratings, they are set by manufacturers and marketing folks and are BS. Not a Ford slam, everyone lies. I think in 2009 or 2010 the SAE is stepping in and they will set the tow ratings for vehicles based on performance criteria. Watch everyones rating drop like stone at that time.

Re: ford explorer sport trac

Update: Incase someone was thinking about getting a sport trac. So far I have loved this truck. It has been towing very well. I only tow a few blocks to get to the boat launch, but launching and retreiving has been very easy. The only thing that bugs me is when you pull the boat out you have to use gas and brake at the same time. If you dont do this then it will roll backwards. It does this anytime you are on a incline and you dont have your foot on the brake. I did take it on a long trip. I drove it 125 miles one way, and it did excellent. The fuel economy wasn't great, I think I averaged 10 mpg towing 70 mph. I'm pretty sure my rpm was above 3,000 though, dont know if that is a bad thing. It exceeded my expectations on how I thought it would handle and pull.

Small load like that 18' boat, your sport trac will handle it just fine.

FWIW - there are no V8 sport tracs.

That's cool, a two year road test. Glad it worked out for you. I use a 2002 Explorer 4WD V-6 to tow our 21' deckboat w/tandem trailer. 150,000 miles on original tranny and engine and she still runs strong. The only problems I've had were with wheel bearings. Just replaced the fourth one two weeks ago so all four have now been replaced, aside from that it's been a great SUV. Hopefully two years from now yours is still running strong too :)
