Hi all,

Left turn...no problems.

Right turn...works fine in the "lane change" mode.....blinks fine. But if I flip the lever up until it clicks into place...I hear a very rapid clicking noise...and no blinking lights at all....

Sometimes it works OK...it's an intermittent thing.

What do you suppose is causing this? 1998 F-150

Thanks for reading, Chuck

Sounds like you have a broken filament in one of the bulbs on the right side. Sometimes they can stick and work (magnetically - power applied), sometimes they won't. Pull the bulbs and check them for cont. with a DVM...

hmmm...

but remember; the left side flashes fine...and the right side will flash fine as well...in the "lane change" position...just a light pressure on the lever.

It's just when I flip the lever up where it clicks into place that I get the problem.

Is there a separate flasher for the left and right side? On older cars that I've worked on...I remember there being just one.

You have a faulty contact in the lever unit (behind the steering wheel). Some are serviceable (remove, dismantle & repair), some are not (sealed). Can't recall what type the F150 has.

yep; that was my "diagnosis" as well...obtained by mental process of elimination...

Sounds like a pain to get to....anyone know how involved it is to get the steering wheel off and then get into that area?

There's so much stuff in the steering column on these vehicles....maybe I should take it in? Anyone have a ballpark for the shop charges?

I have had my 98 steering column dissasembled and it was not that large a job. Buy the chilton's manual and it gives great detail and pictures to follow. My best resource so far has been www.f150online.com. Much like iboats, you have everything from shadetree mechanics to Ford techs. they help with TSB and recall information as well (Cruise control module etc.) Hope it helps!

If your truck has an Air Bag,...... Don't mess with the steering Column.....

You just have to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes prior to working on it. Chiltons puts it in BOLD I think

It's a bad turn signal switch. My new-to-me 97 F150 does the same thing every so often...but it will get worse until I replace it. My folks had a 98 that did it too. They had their's replaced under warranty (their's pooped out when the truck was fairly new). The entire switch comes as an assembly, and isn't too hard to get too. Just remember to heed the above warning about letting the electrical system drain down for 10-15 minutes before poking around by the air bags.

I've gone through 2 of the signal switches in my '84 remove steering wheel to get to it.
