Yeah....our band was quite good too. The football teamed was HORRIBLE! When it came to Friday night games, most people came to see the Band and the Cheerleaders...NOT the football team.

Sazammm, when did ya graduate? Small world aint it? I was one of the ones that came to see the chearleaders and Twirlers.

Re: Forget the Jocks....Got any Band Geeks in here?

Played percussion from 6th grade to 12th grade. In high school I was on a drum line that had about 20 members in a 220 member band. All of our music was written especially for us. We played some difficult stuff (for a HS band) such as Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (by Buddy Rich) and Caravan (by Duke Ellington). I would not trade the experiences I had in that band for anything. The director taught us so much about life and the world (we did not understand that was what he was doing at the time) that it made me a better person.

As I look back on it I can understand how a band in a small town (My graduating class was 200 and there was only one HS in the county) could afford $5000 in marching snares, $7000 in marching bass drums, a set of $10000 timpani used on the sidelines, $20000+ in marimbas, xylophones, bells, etc used on the sidelines, etc, etc. The community stood behind the program because of the conviction of the director and his morals. He is one of the very few men that I consider a role model to this day (and I am 31) I defy you to name another south GA town that had a HS band that had a budget equal to or greater than the football team. We practiced in a $4M music building. The HS weight room was built in the 1970's.............

Re: Forget the Jocks....Got any Band Geeks in here?

I ran some track and played football in HS but my primary interest was music. I wasn't in the school band, I was in a punk band called "Chapel of Roses" as a drummer. We played several gigs at parties and some clubs around Nashville. I decided later I wanted to move forward on the stage so I took the logical step to bass guitar; I wound up making my living with music for about 10 years.

My grandfather was a guitar player behind several greats in Nashville, my mom was a singer who worked with the likes of Porter Wagner and Dolly, and my uncle played bass and 6-string throughout the 70s; my family was not too shocked when I announced music was in my blood as well.

I played trumpet from 6th grade through 10th then switched to french horn through senior year. Continued to play in church many years after that. Also learned drums at 15. My wife played clarinet from junior high through high school. We actually were at junior high together then went to different high schools. Met up some years later and didn't realize it until we started talking about our past. Absolutely love music and also hope one of the young ones take it up.
